Fun but Sad Dragon Rider Adventure

If you like emotional rollercoaster adventures with dragons then this is a great choice. I struggled a bit with the amount of sorrow that Kalina is made to endure, I guess it's just hard to imagine anyone going through the same amount struggles in such a short time. It is a darker fantasy adventure but it is still kept very clean (free of bad language, overly graphic violence, and no sex scenes). It a good middle grade level and up read. It is a story that does pull you in and with the amount of action it is a hard one to put down.

The narrator does a great job and was fun to listen to.

To Be Queen Or Not?

I enjoyed the first book of the series, but I liked this book more. This second book details Kalina's struggles, both internal and external, as to whether she should be queen of the Valdirs or not. The tale describes Kalina's interpersonal relationships, not only with her subjects, but also with her dragon. There are twists and turns, some battle scenes, and complex developments that increased my interest in reading the next book in the series. I recommend this book to others who enjoy this genre. Elizabeth DeVault's narration is more consistent in this book than in the first one, and I found it to be more pleasing. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.

Couldn’t put it down

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Kalina has now found her people and goes through another adventure. She decided to be queen when her father suddenly passed in battle. She soon finds that it is too overwhelming and runs off with another valdir. But it’s abandoning her people really the right thing to do?
Another good fantasy dragon book. Kalina grows and learns a lot about her people and herself. Highly recommend.

Baskerville Book Reviews

I think this story has some pacing issues. There are a few instances where events really lack any weight because they’re over with so quickly. I think if the story was a little longer and could dedicate more time to those moments, it would have worked better. I don’t think the pacing takes much away from the novel though.

Book 1 felt as if its sole purpose was to familiarize readers with the world. Well, book 2 feels as if it needs to set up the story so readers have a use for that previous context. That’s not to say nothing interesting happens in either story. Plenty of interesting things happens in both stories. It’s just extremely clear there’s a bigger picture here and book 2 is only slowly working its way up to it.

The plot follows the logical path you would expect, after the ending of book 1. Some of the twists and reveals took me by surprise and the others… you’d have to have been born yesterday to miss those. One thing I am completely sick of is characters in a fight to the death. You know the protagonist isn’t in any danger, because they’re the protagonist. And they can’t just win every single fight to the death across every story ever, they *always* have to spare their opponent, because they’re just such a hero. It’s so ridiculously played out at this point, I never want to see it again.

The audiobook narration was fine. I could always tell who was talking and there weren’t any common audible errors or issues present.
