Story
Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder is a compassionate and informative guide to understanding this profoundly unsettling - and widely misunderstood - mental illness, believed to affect approximately six percent of the general population. Rather than viewing people with BPD as manipulative opponents in a bitter struggle, or pitying them as emotional invalids, Valerie Porr cites cutting-edge science to show that BPD is a true neurobiological disorder and not, as many come to believe, a character flaw or the result of bad parenting.

People with borderline or narcissistic personality disorders have a serious mental illness that primarily affects their intimate, personal, and family relationships. Often they appear to be normally functioning at work and in public interactions, and narcissists may even be highly effective, in the short term, in some work or social situations. However, in intimate relationships, they can be emotional, aggressive, demeaning, illogical, paranoid, accusing, and controlling - in the extreme.

Story
Would you like to know what BPD is? BPD is also referred to as biosocial disorder among experts. This means that this disorder often starts with an inclination towards biological factors but is then intensified by the social environment of an individual. By temperament, the people with BPD often are intensely emotionally sensitive and very reactive. This is because they tend to feel things immediately and intensely as opposed to other people. Once their powerful and intense emotions have been triggered, it takes them a very long duration to get back to the emotional baseline.

"Are you one of us?" a patient once asked Marsha Linehan, the world-renowned psychologist who developed dialectical behavior therapy. "Because if you were, it would give all of us so much hope." Over the years, DBT had saved the lives of countless people fighting depression and suicidal thoughts, but Linehan had never revealed that her pioneering work was inspired by her own desperate struggles as a young woman. Only when she received this question did she finally decide to tell her story.

Helpful/Insightful
The content was insightful, making it easier to finish. Provided a lot of tips for the person with BPD in addition to people who live/know someone with BPD, & how to support them in a healthy manner. The only downside of this book was the narrator, her voice was great-but she sounded as if she was getting emotional or choked up on and off which was quite bothersome. Other than that minor thing, I would recommend this book if you have BPD or know/with someone that has BPD.

Why won't life work no matter how hard I try?
Is this you? Then you need this.
Very informative and a quick listen. Really broke things down for me that I had been treacherously wondering about myself for my entire life. I have been in and out of very useful therapy for 20 years and never learned these things about myself. And I have been taking a very close look lol This book explained things to me that other people cannot see,, since we learn to cope and "fit in" to society, the majority and severity of our pain is hidden away, painfully inside. This book broke me down, so be ready to learn and accept some heavy truths about yourself and the way you operate. But, I needed this book to help me understand why I do what I do, or.. have done what I've done, and to make the progress I am working on in my life. I now have answers that I have been searching for every single day of my life. I can't stress that part enough!! I am planning to listen to it again since it has so much new information for me. I also see many more books on the topic in my future lol That's a good thing though. I highly recommend this audiobook!! (sped up just the tiniest bit :)

Some Good Information If YOU Can Handle The Reader
The book was good in that it offered many strategies for both members in a relationship. It was a bit repetitive. This could be perceived as good in that the reader/listener hears information more than once. Some suggestions for handling stress are outdated and have been proven as not helpful and anchoring an individual to unhealthy strategies. I was very surprised to hear some of these. WAY OFF!!!
Overall, I would recommend this book. I wrote Audible regarding the amateur read!!! It really got in the way as she constantly stumbles and over announounciate the ends of certain wards.. I do not pay for schlock! This is not the first time I had trouble with an Audio Book on Audible. I requested they up their standards.

Helped in the moment when needed
Having felt reasonably safe for many years I experienced a few events which triggered me significantly. This book help me to feel a bit more grounded as it talks about various ideas and outlines the pertinent issues of this disorder. It won’t provide any specific therapy for structured guidance but it will help you to understand better the places you are in. Of course you need to seek professional help but this was a good emergency listen to help me push through some of the issues I was facing in the moment.

A good book to start with
It gives a new perspective on people with addictive problems and other behavior problems. I had not read much on personality disorders before and was skeptical about these diagnoses, but sometimes the behaviors exhibited by people were otherwise unexplainable, or they would not remember what they had done or said. Many people do not respond to typical anti-depressant therapy. A good book to start with.
