Publisher's Summary

From the critically acclaimed author of Hekla’s Children comes a dark and haunting tale of an ancient cult wreaking bloody havoc on the modern world.

Struggling with the effects of early onset dementia, Dennie Keeling now leads a quiet life. Her husband is dead, her children are grown, and her best friend, Sarah, was convicted of murdering her abusive husband. After Sarah’s tragic death in prison, Dennie has found solace in her allotment, and all she wants is to be left to tend it in peace. Life remains quiet for 12 years, until three strangers take on a nearby plot and Dennie starts to notice unnatural things. Shadowy figures prowl at night; plants flower well before their time. And then Sarah appears, bringing dire warnings and vanishing after daubing symbols on the walls in Dennie’s own blood.

Dennie soon realizes that she is face-to-face with an ancient evil - but with her dementia steadily growing worse, who is going to believe her?

3 Hours Until You Meet The Main Character

I thought the wrong book was uploaded. Nope. It tells a completely other story about Gods and sacrafices while we follow a deserter during WW1. Any notion of the MC having dementia is wasted by the first 14 (audible) chapters. Why? because we've seen the impossible already. Nothing is going to seem far fetched. I'm getting my token back.

The narrator isn't bad. She just has the voice of someone who you would expect to read Peter Rabbit or Paddington Bear. Horror isn't her genre.

The book isn't scary. I'm not a tough guy and I'm just shrugging off everything they've done. it's incredibly boring. Maybe someone else will find joy in it.

Really Fresh Structure--King Fans Should Buy

I read another review that didn't like the book because of how long it took to meet the main character.

On the contrary, I found that refreshing, and it gave a really deep backstory that gave the reader a ton of insight into what was going on, beyond what the protagonist knew! It played with the reader knowing more than our hero, and how things that may seem innocuous are actually dark and sinister because you know our villain's backstory in full.

There are great twists throughout, and it even ends with more structural uniqueness which I won't give away--I'm a huge fan of Stephen King, and I can tell this author is too. The narrator does a great job at putting you in the shoes of the main character and speaking with her voice without being distracting when she played other characters.

Bone Harvest is a great example of British folk horror, and I am so glad I took a chance on it!

really disturbing but like rubber necking an RTA, you can help but look. More times than I expected my teeth itched but stick with it its not a listen that I will forget in the fog of my 3 to 4 audible books a week.

Genius and captivating

This is the fifth book I have read of James Brogdan and each of them superb. This was a dark but rivetting read. Would definitely recommend.

Good Stuff

There are a few glitches in the recording itself, but otherwise a great read. Definitely chilling.

Not for me I’m afraid

This the third book by James brogden I’ve purchased from Audible, the first was plague stones and then Heklas children. I really enjoyed them both and just going off the blurb for bone harvest it sounded good. The problem was that story line doesn’t appear until much later in the book and if I’m honest I almost sent this back thinking audible had made a mistake in the description. It begins during ww1, then there’s a weird religious cult, orgies and a lot of nonsense. I persevered and I was really disappointed, it seemed disjointed and all over the place. Not for me.

the worst brogden I've listened to

a chore to get through. long winded (sometimes boring) story. Absolutely the wrong person chosen to narrate.

Horrible Histories

That is meant as a compliment to the author because he takes folklore and makes them into an engaging and intriguing tale, my only complaint about this story was I actually had more empty for the first characters (the deserter, mother etc) and not the later ones such as deeny and David, I actually found them to be very annoying and would have preferred a different outcome 😉
Narration was good

Still a good book, but…

I have to say I think The Plague Stones is the best so far (I’ve also listened to Hekla’s Children).

Narration of this one is good as all of them have been. I do feel the blurb misrepresents this book though - the story entwines around itself, back and forth, but there is a whole other side to it that makes up over 50% of the story and this has no mention whatsoever. Since the book opens from this point of view, I did initially spend the first several chapters wondering if I was listening to the right book!

Lovely writing as usual, I do enjoy the flow of the words and turns of phrases used.

ok

I was looking forward to this book after thoroughly enjoying the first two I listened to by james Brogden, but tbh I struggled to get into this story at first and I very nearly gave up on it. I persevered, and it did pick up a bit. The narration was not great. I found it slow, boring, and somewhat disjointed at times, as though the narrator was struggling to get the words out. The accents, too, were pretty bad. I sometimes struggled to know who was saying what during a conversation as they would all blend together somehow and sound the same. When Denny and David were chatting, for example, I lost track of who was meant to be speaking.

I think it would have been much more enjoyable with a different narrator.

Not my favourite James Brogden

This one took me a long while to get through. I kept abandoning this and listening to something else. Finally finished but can’t say I loved this one.

Just what I was looking for.

A story within a story within a story. An epic saga.
