“You are carrying in your hands a Black woman’s heart.” (Jericho Brown, author of Pulitzer Prize winner The Tradition)

“[Mans’] lucid and lyrical lines are as undeniable as those of a pop song yet as arresting as only spoken word artistry can be.” (O, the Oprah Magazine)

From spoken word poet Jasmine Mans comes an unforgettable poetry collection about race, feminism, and queer identity.

With echoes of Gwendolyn Brooks and Sonia Sanchez, Mans writes to call herself - and us - home. Each poem explores what it means to be a daughter of Newark, and America - and the painful, joyous path to adulthood as a young, queer Black woman.

Black Girl, Call Home is a love letter to the wandering Black girl and a vital companion to any woman on a journey to find truth, belonging, and healing.

Critic reviews

“Lyrical, vivid.” (Time)

“Each poem is a meditation on a moment, a memory, and a history that guides the reader through the experience of Black womanhood in a way I’ve not experienced before. These poems both explode and glimmer on the page. They demand to be read, to be shared, to be revisited time and time again.” (Clint Smith, number one New York Times best-selling author of How the Word Is Passed)

“[Mans’] lucid and lyrical lines are as undeniable as those of a pop song yet as arresting as only spoken word artistry can be.” (O, the Oprah Magazine)

Listen.. this book not only awakens you to black culture and black history, but it also educates you on just how corrupt, biased and evil American practices were and still are to this day. It lays it on you gentle enough to accept it, but real and blunt enough for you to understand exactly what happened instead of sugar coating our history. Love you all my beautiful black people! ❤️

Must read!

You echoed the lives of so many of us. Many of these poems caused tingles in my body and my blood to run cold, causing me to remember what I hoped to forget. Thank you Jasmine, I will hold these poems dear in this life and the next.

Thank you for seeing me

I loved every part of this book but the poem about Chloe Bailey stopped me in my tracks. That poem was powerful! To be a black girl is not easy in America and the ones judging have no clue what our families have been thru. Our history our culture our suffering and they want to talk about a mermaid that was so deep!

Black women stand up!
