Sharla-Jean Bromley returns to her hometown after a 17-year absence with vengeance in her heart. From the very beginning, her plans go awry when she meets devastatingly handsome Josh Morgan, the man to whom her father left half of his multi-million dollar lumber mill.

Josh, suspicious of Sharla-Jean’s reasons for returning to town after such a long absence, vows to keep control of the company he feels is rightfully his. She is equally determined to prove she can run her father’s mill, even though it means working side-by-side with Josh, a man whose very presence evokes an attraction that is increasingly difficult for her to ignore.

In the process, they must overcome a villain who’s determined to destroy both the lumber mill and their lives. Will Sharla-Jean succeed and heal the anguish that has long filled her soul? Will she and Josh find the passion of a lifetime?

Good Mystery

Sharla-Jean Bromley has returned to her hometown after a seventeen-year absence to find that her father has left her half of his multi-million dollar lumber mill. He has left the other half to, Josh Morgan, who has worked at the mill for the past ten years and built it to the success it is now. These two have conflicting feelings towards each other and the story is filled with angst and emotion. I had a difficult time connecting with the lead characters, especially the heroine. I found her frustratingly dense in many instances and she seemed to jump to conclusions without even thinking or having any proof. The hero wasn’t much better in many cases. There really wasn’t much of a romance in the story in my opinion. Having said that, there was still a good mystery, though the villain was fairly obvious his story and motives were surprising and gave the story a different twist. This part was of the story was interesting and entertaining. Bill Nevitt did a nice job with the character’s voices and emotions and made the listening experience enjoyable. This is the first book I have listened to from both the author and narrator and I will certainly try a second. I did receive a free copy of this audiobook and am providing an unbiased review.

Can you find peace without forgiveness?

Sharla-Jean ran away from her hometown after a devastating incident, including setting fire to her father's lumber factory. Now she's back for her father's funeral, 17yrs later, and the hatred coming off the townspeople is emanating in waves...why is she back, after all, she abandoned the wonderful man? Imagine her surprise when she learns that her father left 1/2 of the factory to his manager! Josh has worked hard over the past 10yrs to help make the factory a success and hates that the woman, who turned her back on his mentor and father figure, is back to claim her inheritance. But Josh has to put aside his ill feelings to work with Sharla-Jean and figure out who is vandalizing the factory. Meanwhile, Sharla-Jean has to reconcile the unforgiving and uncaring man who pushed her away when she needed him, with the caring man portrayed by Josh. When everything comes to light, will Josh forgive Sharla-Jean and defend her or will he push her away? Good romantic suspense with great narration.

Excellent read/listen

Bitter Legacy, my third read/listen from author C.B. Clark. Another well-written & enjoyable mystery/romantic-suspense. Bill Nevitt’s excellent narration made the 10-hour 27-minutes pass very quickly. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. I definitely need to get more by this author & narrator. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Bitter Legacy

Sharla-Jean Bromley has returned to her to hometown, like she always wanted, in a tight red dress and her father's death. Sharla-Jean is there to bury her estranged father. The town people are bitter. They look down on her. Sharla-Jean finds herself half owner of her father's lumber company with a man she is attracted to but afraid of. I felt this was a teen romance. It was annoying at times. Josh Morgan. Josh is the other half owner. He doesn't like or trust Sharla-Jean. Never the less, the stipulations in her father's will, they're forced to be partners for the next year. Someone is out to sabotaging the lumber company. It's up to Sharla-Jean and Josh to find out who and stop them. Bitter Legacy was not for me. I'm going to try and listen to this again later. Maybe I will change my opinion.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Romcom with some action

This story is about a wealthy man who leaves his company in equal shares to his estranged daughter and coworker with an interesting condition. They each have a history and a story that intertwine and evolve during the plot. It was a nice feel-good story with romance and some action in the background. The performance was entertaining and passionate and I loved how the narrator provided energy and excitement to the story. This book was given to me for free at my request and I have left this objective review voluntarily.

Intrigue, Mystery & Romance

Intrigue, mystery, romance, action and adventure awaits you with this romantic suspense story. I really enjoyed listening to this book. I found myself relating to Sharla-Jean often and loved how strong she was. Josh was equally strong and the two MCs didn't always mesh well. I found myself rooting for them because both were relatable and seemed real. The narration by Bill Nevitt was very well done. He gives the characters their own voices and emotions and truly brings the story to life, making it more enjoyable and entertaining. If you enjoy romantic suspense mysteries then you should check this book out.

Kept hoping it would get better

**Spoiler Alert**

This book is weird. The main lead Charlotte is introduced as a formidable woman in full control of her life, who takes no prisoners. But she quickly crumbles into a vulnerable woman who gets talked into doing things she doesn't want to do and is easily manipulated by men. Most of the men in this book come across as extremely abusive with the way they treat her, making it an uncomfortable read. Charlotte has been raped in the past, has PTSD, has had therapy but the rape was not brought up during therapy so she never dealt with it. She is very uncomfortable being alone with men. So it's weird when a male employee turns up unannounced at her cabin when no-one is supposed to know she's there, and lets him in when she is alone & very uncomfortable within his presence. He takes the opportunity to try & rape her but is interrupted. Not only does she not immediately fire him (he is fired by the co-owner), but he feeds her a bunch of lies she does not once question and re-hires him to work with her! That simply doesn't make any sense. A lot of things in this book don't make sense. The male lead Josh one minute dramatically hates her guts & treats her like trash, the next lusts after her & tries to be romantic. His personality switches within seconds, it's like he has a double personality disorder.

There were so many plot holes. Every time a lie or truth is about to naturally come to light with characters simply talking to each other and comparing notes, the author conveniently finds a way to make them avoid each other to string the story along. The storyline is very predictable which was really annoying. Charlotte comes across as extremely clueless, as she takes everything at face value, & never fact checks anything. Josh is also clueless when he ignores obvious fraud and sabotage within his company which is detrimental to the success of his business. Considering his business is his life's motivation, it doesn't make sense that the owner would just turn a blind eye. The bedroom scenes are corny and there was a weird Cinderella ending.

I was given this book for free of my own choosing and voluntarily left this review.

Mystery and romance in a blazing combination!

This book is absolutely filled to the brim with emotion and suspense. Sharla-Jean comes back to her hometown after 17 years for her father's funeral. She inherits 1/2 his business with certain stipulations. And she has to share the experience with Josh, her father's protege. His business and his partner aren't the only things she inherits. There is an arsonist on the loose and all signs might be pointing to Sharla-Jean. She and Josh need to put aside their differences, forgive themselves, unravel the past and work together to solve the mystery before one or both of them die.

The story is a bit long and heavy with detail. That isn't a bad thing, it just is what it is. I enjoyed the audiobook and enjoyed reading how Josh and Sharla-Jean's relationship develops.

Same old same old

This story is almost a rehash of other story lines with changes of name, town, employer and boy. While the story was entertaining it was not original.

Going back to solve a future

Sharla-Jean Bromley returns to her hometown after her father death and met Josh Morgan with whom she will have to run her late father mill for one year.
Sharla-Jean and Josh fight but also cannot stay far way from each other for long. A Love story filled with a a good dose of mystery. But this tense atmosphere between the two of them, in my opinion, sometimes was too much.
I really enjoyed Bill Nevitt narration, he really gives life and texture to the different characters, giving the right pace to the story.

Fun holiday read!

I read this straight after 'Broken Trust' by the same author. Both share some of the same elements - some romance and some suspense.I thought that this one had the edge story wise and so gave it 4 stars for story as against 3 for 'Broken Trust'. There are more twists and turns in this one and the events are well plotted and interesting. The romance is lighthearted and follows the tried and tested theme where they hate each other on sight and then.... well you know the rest! I have to say that the descriptions of her male leads physical attributes are always a bit cheesy but it adds to the fun.

The narrator Bill Nevitt, is one of my favourites. I've been known to choose books solely on the premise that he's the narrator and I'm never disappointed.

I look forward to reading (listening) to more C B Clark in the future.

Enjoyable

A fairly standard romance book. Sharla-Jean's estrangement from her father seems harsh until more of the story is revealed. Her return to her home town following his death and the ensuing story all plays out neatly with no huge surprises. Nevertheless, it's easy listening raised to a higher level due to the stellar narration by Bill Nevitt. This is certainly not the kind of book I would usually listen to, but Mr Nevitt enhances all and every thing to which he lends his considerable voice performing skills. A congenial audio book, which doesn't demand to much of its listener but it's calibre is lifted by excellent narration

Did not disappoint

I loved this book. It’s a story of a wayward daughter coming back to town after the death of her father but the townsfolk all think her father was such an amazing man and she was horrible to run out on him many years before. She knows different and the hurt and anger has not gone away about the past and is made even worse when his will is read. The story shows that not everything is black and white and sometimes forgiveness is the only way to move forward with your life. This book is also narrated by Bill Nevitt so you can’t go wrong there.

A good edge-of-your seat romantic suspense

This reeled me in from the start. A great cast of characters, and the gradual thawing of the animosity between Sharla-Jean and Josh Morgan was well done and the growing relationship between them, after the initial animosity, well drawn.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it held my interest all the way through and I thought the narrator was excellent and put across the various characters well.
