Publisher's Summary

In the spirit of Amy Poehler's Yes Please, Lena Dunham's Not That Kind of Girl, and Roxane Gay's Bad Feminist, a powerful collection of essays about gender, sexuality, race, beauty, Hollywood, and what it means to be a modern woman.

One month before the release of the highly anticipated film The Birth of a Nation, actress Gabrielle Union shook the world with a vulnerable and impassioned editorial in which she urged our society to have compassion for victims of sexual violence. In the wake of rape allegations made against director and actor Nate Parker, Union - a 44-year-old actress who launched her career with roles in iconic '90s movies - instantly became the insightful, outspoken actress that Hollywood has been desperately awaiting. With honesty and heartbreaking wisdom, she revealed her own trauma as a victim of sexual assault: "It is for you that I am speaking. This is real. We are real."

In this moving collection of thought-provoking essays infused with her unique wisdom and deep humor, Union uses that same fearlessness to tell astonishingly personal and true stories about power, color, gender, feminism, and fame. Union tackles a range of experiences, including bullying, beauty standards and competition between women in Hollywood, growing up in white California suburbia and then spending summers with her black relatives in Nebraska, coping with crushes, puberty, and the divorce of her parents. Genuine and perceptive, Union bravely lays herself bare, uncovering a complex and courageous life of self-doubt and self-discovery with incredible poise and brutal honesty. Throughout, she compels us to be ethical and empathetic and reminds us of the importance of confidence, self-awareness, and the power of sharing truth, laughter, and support.

Get prepared to talk to your bestie and girlie

Wow. Loved learning about Gabrielle Union's story and what made her who she is. She spills the tea on lots and makes you feel vulnerable with her as she has healed along her journey of becoming the woman you see today, a woman that is ready for so much more. She tells her story of how she learned to live, forgive, and be in the present. She holds herself accountable to fame and social justice, and why its important for her to be aware. Great listen for a long workday...Amazing.

👏🏾👏🏾 thank you. Thank You. THANK YOU!! #BRAVO

My Lord! Such an honest and open depiction of life. ALL OF IT. As an actress, recovering perfectionist, high school AP and National Honor Society student, and black girl growing up in the suburbs of Arlington, TX, myself — Gabrielle Union hits the nail on the head...in more ways than I could’ve imagined!!! Authenticity at its finest. Plus, hearing her tell her own story in her own words, is the icing on an already delicious cake. She made me feel like I’m not crazy.

In the words of Marianne Williamson, “as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same.” Thank you for the OK to stand a bit taller and breathe a bit deeper in my own #BlackGirlMagic.

I like sweet wine. Virtual glass of Riesling raised to you, Gabrielle Union. CHEERS!

Well yes,I'll take a scotch.

Straight out the gate this was excellent. The flow of each chapter felt like a steady conversation, where drinks and honesty are on the table, served with tissue breaks for laughter and pain, and head scratching moments for further back and forth discussions that will last a lifetime. The chapter titles along are worthy of essay and dissertation pieces, and I expect many book forums will be heading that way. I enjoyed the audio version, having the author read was a delight, Union did a marvellous run for her debut. Well worth buying in any format, but audio was the winner for me.

A honest, brave and enjoyable book.

I really liked this book; could not put it down. It is deep and profound, in some places, and absolutely hilarious in others. It is read brilliantly by the author. It deals with assimilation, race, and many sensitive issues, delicately and yet so frankly. Well done Gabrielle Union!

An irresistible story collection

Gabrielle Union is a fantastic storyteller! Each was told with such heart, humour or hurt - sometimes a combination of the three. Well worth your time and money.

Empowering and Entertaining

This book was so engaging and entertaining. It really felt as if Gabrielle was sitting across the table from me and we were enjoying a glass of wine. I didn’t think any actresses story would relate to me, but it totally did, on so many different levels. Loved this book and I highly recommend it.
