Publisher's Summary

Nathaniel Tilton was leading an ordinary existence in his early 30s as a financial advisor in Boston. Then, without a destination in mind, he set out to experience life in more meaningful ways. His path was forged when he met famed MIT blackjack team member Semyon Dukach, who inspired Nathaniel to become a world-class blackjack player.

Together with his friend D.A., he dove headfirst into the life of an elite blackjack card counter. But while studying the many books available on blackjack strategy, he discovered that the tactics described all applied to either big teams or solo practitioners. Accordingly, adjustments were made so that the techniques would work while playing with a single partner. The result was the creation of a virtually undetectable small-team system, something never before documented.

The details of this secret system are delivered within the pages of this exhilarating narrative, describing a glitzy gambler's life of high-roller suites, gourmet restaurants, and top-shelf entertainment, along with a dark side of deception and personal risk that would eventually take him to the casino backrooms he'd hoped he would never see.

The Blackjack Life provides an informed view of the opportunities that still exist for skilled players, a detailed explanation of what it takes to become one, and a thorough chronicling of what it's like to travel that road. It's also the story of the growth of a man who discovered who he was and who he wanted to be in the unlikeliest of places - the world of a professional blackjack player.

Great audiobook! Got so much more than I expected

I bought this audiobook because I have an interest in casinos and the behind-the-scenes descriptions of professional gamblers, and it provided a great insight into the world of card-counting blackjack players. I know that I do not have what it takes to learn how to count cards... in fact, I don't think I even want to PLAY blackjack again, after learning more about the money wasted by novice players.

But, if you are interested in learning how to count cards, this book provides an entertaining and informative roadmap to the process. The author has some incredible stories to tell about life as a card counter.

What I did NOT expect to get from this book, but what I ultimately will take away from it more than anything else, is the inspirational message the author instills about how anyone can make huge changes in his life by finding a passion for something. I was amazed to learn about the amount of work and study that he and his partner did, and how they found success by literally treating it as a business. Through passion and hard work, they went from complete blackjack novices to a couple of the best counters in the country. And his life changed for the better because of it.

The book has technical information, anecdotes, insight, humor and suspense, and it all blended together into a really fast, easy and enjoyable read. I highly recommend it!

More than just a book about blackjack

I started this audiobook book thinking it would be a good way to learn about the ins and outs of blackjack, but it was much more than that. The author does an excellent job of explaining blackjack playing strategies, ways to beat the house and his adventures in Vegas. But woven into the blackjack talk and Vegas parties is the author's personal journey after losing his father and this is what makes the Blackjack Life an excellent read and the author's story meaningful. If you are looking for a great book on blackjack theory and strategy....get this audiobook. If you are looking for a great story....get this audiobook!

Entertaining and Informative... Wow!

This is a very compelling story. It just happens to take place in a world most of us have never seen. Most books (99%) about blackjack are dry and boring unless you live and die for the game. This is a character driven story that takes us along for the ride. We get to see him grow, learn and transform all while learning about card counting. This is for any fan of Bringing Down the House. Except the beauty of this book is it's actually written by the main character. We actually get to see inside the head of the protagonist while he's being back roomed, backed off, winning, losing and in the pursuit of something greater.

Surprisingly well written and deeply absorbing

I pretty much binged this book with my wife on our cross-country trip to Las Vegas. Neither of us could stop listening until we got to the end. Great story and some great pro tips as well! Also, the narrator was fantastic!

Excellent audiobook!

A fun way to learn about blackjack while also listening to a great story. Certainly gave me a deeper appreciation for the game, the players, and the casinos.

Perfect mix

I loved this book. It was the perfect mix between having an exciting narrative arc and valuable insight to the game of blackjack. It was impossible to put the book down. I hope the author writes another book.

Absolutely loved it!

A hell of a story! Nathaniel Tilton's journey from zero to blackjack hero is a thing of legend. I decided to purchase the audio version instead of the print and I'm so glad I did. The narrator did a fantastic job!

Definitely recommended for lovers of blackjack

Very well written and gives a great view of his story of card counting, from the initial reservations he had and how he became an expert. As someone who is an aspiring amateur card counter, this book makes card counting seem feasible.
