Lexi, an investigative journalist, believes she's simply uncovering the truth behind a series of mysterious fires. Her path crosses with Elijah, a smooth-talking lender whose charm barely conceals the veiled intentions beneath. His messy ties to the powerful Garza family pull her into a world where power is bloodstained and secrets are currency.

Then there’s Mateo Garza—the eldest son. He’s violent, unpredictable, and as untouchable as a ghost. As Lexi’s investigation tightens around him, his presence becomes a shadow over her every move. But is he who she thinks he is?

Determined to expose the truth, Lexi finds herself tangled in a web of growing attraction to a man she never imagined could be an ally. With emotions clouding her judgment, she enters a high-stakes game where trusting the wrong person could have catastrophic consequences.

Favorite quote:

“I’m not sure when it happened, Alexandra, but somewhere along the way, I decided I would die for you. And now, if you’ll have me, I want to live for you. With you.”

I absolutely ate this one up. It is the perfect blend of romance, suspense and spice. It has a snarky FMC and a possessive MMC. And the side characters are top tier.

Lexi is an investigative journalist looking into suspicious fires happening to local businesses. This leads her into dangerous territory with Garza family. She finds herself mixed up with Mateo who is the eldest son of the Garza family and Elijah a lender who is in deep with the family. It’s messy and feelings develop that shouldn’t and it gets messier. I don’t want to say more and ruin the suspense.

And as an audiobook? Absolute perfection!

Savanah Thomas did a perfect job capturing Lexi’s personality. Sean Masters was fantastic as Elijah. And Gregory Salinas as Mateo was everything. This cast together is a 10/10. And the spicy scenes were phenomenal.

Definitely grab this audiobook it’s a fast paced listen that will keep you on your toes. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

The narrators were spot on 🖤

I listened to the audiobook version of this story and really enjoyed the story line. Lexi and Mateo's dynamic is so freaking good. The characters were interesting, the plot was kept me engaged the whole way through. It's one of those stories that you feel like you need to know what's next... one more chapter before bed kind of deal. The narration by Savannah Thomas, Sean Masters and Gregory Salinas was delicious. They did an amazing job bringing these characters to life.

Great dynamic!

Where do I even begin with this one! This story was such a fun experience. Following an investigative journalist in a major crime world saga was so much fun. The suspense and drama in this story was balanced perfectly. I was Hooked from page one. Lexi was one determined journalist. She was going to solve this case and break the story not matter what it took. Meeting Elijah “randomly” set everything in motion. Elijah oh Elijah 🫠! I would have loved to see more of that storyline because I have A feeling it would have been 🔥🔥. Although I don’t know if I could not see Mateo have his spotlight. Lexi was one lucky lady though that’s for sure.

I loved that Lexi helped Mateo find his voice. Find the man he needed to be. He was so resistant for so long but when it was all said and done I think he made the best choice for himself.

The way the whole crime aspect unfolded had me on the edge of my seat. It held me captive desperate to see how it would all play out. I’m proud of Lexi for standing up for herself against everyone. She is one strong FMC.

all the characters were perfect in this story. The side charecters were fantastic! I really enjoyed the audio as well. The casting was perfect. I’m clearly on a Sean masters kick because he has narrated my last 4 audio books. The man can literally do it all! Savannah Thomas did a phenomenal job as well brining Lexi to life. Ofcourse we cannot forget Gregory Salina’s he was a perfect Mateo. Every time I heard his voice I smiled. The casting for this again was perfect!

I cannot Wait for the next book. I hope Gabe makes a bigger appearance in that one ! The fact that this was L.K Kagey debut novel is outstanding it was amazing! I cannot Wait to see what else she has in store for her readers!

Thank you Blue Nose for this amazing ALC!

ALC Review; This audiobook was truly exceptional from start to finish. With three fantastic narrators (Savannah Thomas, Sean Masters, and Gregory Salinas) their performance elevated an already gripping story into something unforgettable.

Savannah Thomas voices our FMC, Lexi, and I was genuinely blown away. I don’t think I’ve ever heard her take on a country twang before, but she delivered it with such authenticity that I actually paused to double-check the credits. 🤣 Her range, emotional precision, and the way she captured Lexi’s intelligence, humor, and vulnerability made her performance stand out in a major way.

Sean Masters brings Elijah to life with the same consistency and nuance I’ve come to expect from him. His portrayal carried so much weight. You can hear the heartbreak, the hesitation, and the fear threading through Eli’s every moment on the page. His delivery grounded the tension beautifully.

Gregory Salinas was truly the perfect Mateo. His voice added a level of intensity that made the story feel complete. The quiet menace, the unpredictability, the power… 😮‍💨 He executed every layer with absolute control. His presence made the suspense hit harder.

The combination of these three narrators made this a fully immersive experience.
Their chemistry, pacing, and emotional alignment with the story created a seamless listening experience that heightened the tension, the mystery, and even the spicy threads of romance woven throughout.

I genuinely loved this audiobook and will 100% be returning for Book 2 in the Flame & Frost Duet.
Special thanks to @BlueNoseAudio for this ALC

This is book one in the Flame and Frost Duet, preformed in Duet Multicast.

The way I can’t wait for book two!

I would classify this as a romantic suspense and I was sucked in from the beginning. This was the perfect mix of emotion, trauma, romance, banter and suspense.

L.K. Kagey really had me on my toes and as soon as you think you have the book figured out…think again!
The FMC was the whole package. Her honesty and feistiness had me in love with her from the beginning. The narrator, Savannah Thomas, truly captured her perfectly! The emotion in her voice was incredible.
Lexi is an investigative journalist with a traumatic past. She starts investigating local fires… and she really doesn’t know what she is diving into. You just have to listen to it to get the full picture!

Elijah, narrated by Sean Masters, is a “private” lender. Sean Masters captured his persona perfectly and that slight southern drawl, yes please! The way he really showed his emotion and constant battle within himself. He outdid himself!

Mateo, oldest son in the Garza family, narrated by Gregory Salinas. I don’t even have words! He was everything! The battle between being good but living up to what he was programmed to be. He captured his rawness and not to mention that voice! When the spice was there it was THERE!

I will recommend this audiobook all day! It had me in all my feels. The twists and turns kept me on my toes!

I love a good story that grabs your attention and keeps it until the end. This story definitely done that with the suspense and twists. It also had great characters. The chemistry between Mateo and Lexi was 🔥 and the way they were with each other had my heart melting. My heart broke for Elijah though despite the ways he messed up. And his brother Gabe.. I need more! We don’t get to know a lot about him but, the way this ended I’m intrigued. I can’t wait for the next book and to find out how things continue for all these characters! This one had me in so many of my feels and I loved it!

Savannah Thomas, Sean Masters and Gregory Salinas did amazing narrating this! The way they captured so many characters along with their personalities and emotions was perfection! I love how well their voices fit the characters and complimented each other. They really brought this story to life!

When a book opens with a dedication to an ex that reads, “Your greatest contribution to my life was pissing me off enough to be successful out of pure spite. This book has depth, stamina, and a satisfying climax—three things you never managed to deliver,” you know it’s going to be one with bite.

And it absolutely was.

Lexi, an investigative reporter with fire in her veins, doesn’t back down from anything—or anyone. Savannah Thomas captures her fierce determination and subtle Texas drawl perfectly, giving her that mix of brains, confidence, and grit that makes her impossible not to root for.

Then there’s Elijah, the smooth-talking “lender” whose charm barely conceals his darker side, voiced by Sean Masters, who plays the morally ambiguous role so well you start questioning your own judgment.

And finally—Mateo Garza. The tattooed, pierced, morally gray enforcer narrated by Gregory Salinas, whose performance had me hanging on every word. The chemistry between him and Lexi was pure fire, and the tension between them could’ve melted steel.

This story is a rollercoaster of secrets, danger, and unexpected emotion. Even the side characters, like Steph and Serena, added great balance and personality.

That bike scene? I had to pause and collect myself.

Fast-paced, addictive, and full of twists, Beneath the Surface is the kind of story that keeps your pulse racing and your curiosity burning. I’m absolutely ready for book two.

This novel was a beautifully written slow burn. That kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time. It has you feeling all the feels. Giggling at the banter, crying out at their pain, and raging right along side them. Did I mention THE SMUT? Had me blushing at times 🤭 I am so happy to be part of the ALC TEAM! The voice actors brought the whole book to life!

🎧 Beneath The Surface (Flame and Frost Duet, Book 1)
by L.K. Kagey
Narrated by Savannah Thomas, Sean Masters & Gregory Salinas

This one definitely surprised me, in the best “wait, what just happened?” way. The blurb promises a romantic suspense rooted in danger, secrets and an arson investigation that keeps tightening around the Garza family and Mateo, and the book really leans into that. The tension surrounding the case, and the unraveling truth were some of my favorite parts.

And I have to say, the chemistry between Mateo and Lexi absolutely worked for me. Mateo ended up being my favorite character in the entire story: unpredictable and with the intensity the plot needed.
Lexi was a bit harder for me to fully connect with, maybe because the insta-love took me out of it for a moment, or because she started so strong but seemed to falter toward the end, but I still found her arc compelling within the larger suspense storyline.

And now I’m very curious to see where book two is going, especially with how much is left simmering beneath the surface.

The narration was impeccable. Duet is my favorite format, and this cast delivered. Savannah Thomas is a narrator I would listen to read literally anything, she brings so much emotional precision to every scene. Sean Masters and Gregory Salinas were absolutely perfect as Mateo and Elijah, and I’m really hoping we hear even more from them in the next installment.

And that dedication? Absolutely feral. I loved it.
