Publisher's Summary

As featured in the Ram Dass documentary film Becoming Nobody, five essential live teaching sessions on audio, presented here in their entirety

"The game is not about becoming somebody, it’s about becoming nobody." (Ram Dass)

If you’re a spiritual explorer of any age or tradition, chances are you’ve heard of Ram Dass. This singular luminary began his “somebody training” as Richard Alpert - the 1960’s Harvard-psychologist-turned-hippie who tripped with Timothy Leary, befriended beat poets and Tibetan lamas, found his lifelong guru in India, and wrote the perennial classic Be Here Now

That’s the “somebody” part of his story. But for those who’ve experienced Ram Dass live as he shares his insights and personal journey on the way to becoming nobody - he has been for many the spark that ignited them to the liberating truth of who we really are.

This audio collection brings us five essential sessions, featured in the Ram Dass documentary film Becoming Nobody, presented here in their entirety. Each beautifully illuminates a core dimension of Ram Dass’s wisdom. Through teaching stories, true accounts, eye-opening revelations, and his one-of-a-kind sense of humor, this legendary teacher helps show us the way out of the prison of our self-identity - and into the joy of being at once “nobody” and the universal divine at play in the world.

Ram Dass' Greatest Hits

If you've been following Ram Dass for years, this will serve as a beautiful "Greatest Hits" compilation. Maybe you have heard most of these talks, but the selection is very well made and thoroughly enjoyable, full of wisdom and struggle, which resonates very easily with anyone who listens.

If, on the other hand, you're discovering Ram Dass and want to know more about his work, then this is definitely the best way to dive into his teachings. Not a dull moment.

Ram Dass delivers like no other. What a beautiful, open and honest teacher. Highly recommended.

Awakening is Realizing you are Imprisoned

A very entertaining, humorous listen, but with serious depth worth thinking over.

From the soul's point of view, in the middle level of the soul, the curriculum of the soul has 2 levels. So the soul uses experiences of incarnation to be in the world but not of the world. Soul doesn't have aversions, but soul sees attractions or aversions in the ego. So being in the soul allows you to realize your incarnation is about extracting yourself from attractions and aversions. The point is not to push away from them, but to allow them.

Becoming nobody too

So thankful for these teachings. so thankful for the gentle voice of Ram Dass in narrating his story. only 1 suggestion- change the format so "Audible" credits dont jar you out of deep meditation... or just plan on using irritation as another teaching moment. 🕉

deep and deeply funny

Loved this. my first Ram Dass listen. I had no idea he was so funny. And his lessons put a lot into perspective for me. Thanks Ram. I've listened through each chapter 2+ times. Now I'm looking for more Ram Dass material.

Truth. It frightens most people.

Ram Dass is an American Hero. Sad that the "psychedelics" which assisted Richard Alpert in discovering there IS MORE to life than he'd been aware of as a younger man aren't accessible to the masses. That lack of awareness runs rampant in our "culture". Readily available instead is booze,. How stupid is that? Alcohol is a drug that entraps and kills so many people it's criminal even before one considers the collateral damage it does to those who love them. It's long past time for our "leaders" to start paying attention! This publication is an EXCELLENT collection of Ram Dass teachings. Kudos.

Soul piercing

If you listen to the words, really listen to them and not just have it as background noise, a profound change happens within your own being.

Essential to lovers of Eastern philosophy!

I wanted to like this more than I ended up liking it. I love the title, and I love the opening talk. For me, every talk got weaker and weaker. The opening talk (Somebodiness) is funny, and easy to grasp; Ram Dass is like a spiritual comedian almost. The middle talks, especially the second one was pretty hard to grasp. And the final talk was very hard to listen to for me. Ram spoke very slow, and soft the entire talk. I understand the type of effect he was going for, but it was almost painful to try and listen to it while out walking, I'm a much bigger fan of Alan Watts when it comes to these celebrity gurus of the late 20th century. The first talk is so good, I can see myself coming back to this recording just for that in the future.

This man still needs a lot of attention

I have enjoyed some spontaneous quotes by this man so I decided to listen to a book. I experienced him draining the audience of laughter many times while seeming to need and enjoy it. He speaks of "Milking things for what they are worth" but it seemed to me he needed to hear the laughter a little too much and it was also distracting. I've listened to and read a lot of philosophy, psychology Christian and non Christian, Buddhist and Zen. I conclude now, that Spiritualism has degenerated over the years and I thought, even though there were many statements in this book that count as worthy, that this is just another a version of the degeneration and we are buying into it. This is not the highest plain to be reached at all, this is kindergarten comedy with man's ego filling in the blanks.
Today, as long as we say "The Ancients" people are mesmerized. I say, stand alone and discover for yourself because, what if they have it wrong. After all, if you follow this man's train of thought, all you are doing is following this man's train of thought.
If you have a different fingerprint to the rest of the entire human race, then why do you follow another man's train of thought. If you use this stuff to help you expand you own inner thinking, spitting out all the hocus-pocus involved and just sticking to the essentials FOR YOU, not what sounds great - then you can apply what you have learned and make definite changes to your life and behavior. If you listen to this sort of thing because you like to be known as associating with the HIP guru's then you are more than likely going to remain where you are and need another HIP guru to listen to again....... in order to get your intellectually spiritual high. Does this world feed us what is good for us, or is it all just a business designed to bring us back for more. If people were applying these so called spiritual techniques, then the world would be improving and word would be spreading and more people would be growing internally. BUT the only thing growing in this world is medication, entertainment, violence and more guru businesses like this. I guess it all boils down to whether you attach yourself to this line of thinking or use a tiny bit of it to think for yourselves and get YOUR life into the order you yearn for - application, rather than another book by.....?
I made a few notes as I read, just a few. My summary I suppose you could call it. Now I will concentrate on my notes and apply them to my life because I came to the book looking for inspiration to unravel something in my own life, not to follow a man or to gar gar over yet another guru. Nobody has the recipe for my happiness but me. I only came to this book to water what is already inside me but I didn't find too much. What I did find I will definitely use, and I'll milk THAT for all it's worth.

In this book Ram Dass is much further than in the original here and now. He is humble and shares his incredible development. This is the first book of this kind which has made me cry and experience emotions way beyond of what I could touch.

Ram Dass is an incredible teacher

Ram Dass is a truly incredible being, I love that he openly and honestly passes his wisdom to others. He comes from such a place of truth and talks about his own faults and humanness which is extremely helpful. I highly recommend all of his books and talks. After listening to this I have more clarity in my own human experience. Very well done <3
