Publisher's Summary

Mae West, a far cry from the Hollywood actress, has been thrown for a loop. Her plush lifestyle in the big city of New York comes to a screeching halt after the FBI raids her mansion and arrests her husband, Paul West, for a Ponzi scheme that rips people out of millions of dollars.

Mae finds herself homeless, friendless, and penniless. All hope isn't lost... the only thing Mae got to keep that the government didn't seize is a tourist camp ground, Happy Trails, in Normal, Kentucky.

By the look of the brochure, Happy Trails has plush Kentucky Bluegrass, a crystal clear lake, and a beach chair with her name on it. Mae figures she'll take a couple weeks' vacation with her toes dipped in the lake.

Mae quickly finds out that Happy Trails and the citizens of Normal were also victims of Paul's schemes, making her lower than than lake scum in the residents' eyes. Mae doesn't think things could get much worse, but as luck would have it, Paul West has escaped from prison and is found dead, murdered, floating in the Happy Trails lake.

Time is running out for Mae to prove that she's innocent and nothing like her husband. If only she could get someone to believe her before the curtain is closed on this Hollywood namesake.

A very good start

This was a fun book. However, I felt like something was missing, like more connectivity along the story line. Just a bit more detailing. waiting for the next one though.

Dizzy or Smart

Main character either seemed stupid or smart. She is a misfit. Story ok, some good laughs. Mostly just a bit undeveloped

boring and whiny

Not a likeable character in the book. Whiny, complaining and utterly predictable. Don't waste your time.

Mixed motives and too many plot holes..

Potential Spoilers...

This book is very unevenly written that it was hard for me to listen to without turning to my husband to complain.

Mae West is heading to Kentucky right after she finds out her EX-husband (this is emphasized multiple times!) was running a Ponzie scheme and cheated people out of amounts of money ranging from $2,000 - $14 million. Later in the book (after a week of activities), she's been dealing with this for "months." Her husband is found dead in the scum pond on the campground. (No big deal.) After he escaped from a jail...or a penitentiary. It keeps changing.

Mae is determined to get the Happy Trails Campground (the only property left after her husband commits fraud with her finances) back in shape and attracting tourists. But then, she's motivated by the need to apologize to each person in Normal, KY that her husband wronged (?) while the most incompetent FBI agent in literature is fumbling around with evidence.

I gave up when Mae goes to a WORKING HORSE FARM with animals...cause, Kentucky...and the owners of the WORKING HORSE FARM are packing their stuff (that the FBI either didn't bother to take in their "raid"?) Because if the people were cheated out of $14 million there's no way there would still be HORSES on their HORSE FARM. Those animals would've been taken as part of the assets, but the FBI is really bad at "raids."

I give up.

Obnoxious Sleuth

Mae West was the epitome of spoilt, entitled, airhead and she didn’t improve much as the story progressed.

I wanted to like her and was sympathetic to her horrible situation after losing everything. But WOW. Even though, of course, the people of Normal losing their life savings to HER HUSBAND wasn’t her fault, her complete lack of empathy was astounding.

Also, she could not understand why people would be angry when she invaded the their homes, and she demanded money, under threat of eviction, from a family HER HUSBAND swindled of their life savings! Worse, she showed zero guilt for how she treated the family and didn’t understand why they were unfriendly towards her...???

I love the idea of this series and the town but I can not read about such a heartless and selfish lead.
