NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER.

From the author of Irreversible Damage, an investigation into a mental health industry that is harming, not healing, American children

In virtually every way that can be measured, Gen Z’s mental health is worse than that of previous generations. Youth suicide rates are climbing, antidepressant prescriptions for children are common, and the proliferation of mental health diagnoses has not helped the staggering number of kids who are lonely, lost, sad and fearful of growing up. What’s gone wrong with America’s youth?

In Bad Therapy, bestselling investigative journalist Abigail Shrier argues that the problem isn’t the kids—it’s the mental health experts. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with child psychologists, parents, teachers, and young people, Shrier explores the ways the mental health industry has transformed the way we teach, treat, discipline, and even talk to our kids. She reveals that most of the therapeutic approaches have serious side effects and few proven benefits. Among her unsettling findings:

  • Talk therapy can induce rumination, trapping children in cycles of anxiety and depression
  • Social Emotional Learning handicaps our most vulnerable children, in both public schools and private
  • “Gentle parenting” can encourage emotional turbulence—even violence—in children as they lash out, desperate for an adult in charge

Mental health care can be lifesaving when properly applied to children with severe needs, but for the typical child, the cure can be worse than the disease. Bad Therapy is a must-listen for anyone questioning why our efforts to bolster America’s kids have backfired—and what it will take for parents to lead a turnaround.

Ms. Shrier has written a wonderful book that is more insightful that all of the psychobabble in our society's ether put together. After reading it, you'll understand the Zoomer Generation much better. A must read!

Very well done very well researched and organized . Abigail is great , I love her countering thoughts accepted by so many lemmings in this day and age . wish I would have read this book 30 years ago.

Invaluable insight for people of all stages and ages who are trying to navigate the perils of this modern age.

The Most Important Book of This Decade

Amazing book that all parents should read. It validates things we do right to increase independence and create a stable home, and highlights areas where we have been following modern-day, failed SEL concepts without realizing. This stuff permeates society and it makes us as parents second guess all of our instincts as the parents.

Must Read for Parents

Listened to this book and was pretty blown away with how a major part of the population, education system, governing bodies would think it's good to mentally handicap anyone let alone children

Scary and sad but amazing

Excellent and well researched discussion of the overuse of therapy in normal children. She also exposes the rot that is “Social and Emotional Learning” in schools and how the education establishment seeks to undermine parental authority. A must read if you have school age children.

Eye opening!

I loved the deep dive into the assessment of our mental health diagnoses and how this has been a downfall for our children.

Great information a must read!

I found the book highly enjoyable and perfectly timed for my current stage of parenthood. It addresses many of the concerns my wife and I have had in raising kids, and it has made me take a hard look at some of the decisions I’ve made to help them. I hope all parents, teachers, and community leaders - no matter what your political, religious, or sociological persuasion - read this book in its entirety with an open mind. The next generation deserves a chance to experience life to its fullest, and it starts by understanding many of the findings this book has to offer.

Well written and researched
