Editorial Reviews

This psychological suspense thriller in the tradition of Silence of the Lambs will have listeners loath to hit the pause button. Bad Karma follows psychopath Agnes Hatcher, institutionalized at Darden State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. When Agnes’ psychiatrist decides to take a vacation, she flies into a jealous rage, escapes from the hospital, and traces the erstwhile shrink - her one true love - to a remote California island. Performer Elizabeth Thompson delivers a roiling portrait of Agnes’ psychotic obsessions. Thompson’s adroit pacing lends authenticity to the unhinged heroine’s twisted mindset, as dour, depressive, psychosexual deliberations are punctured by ferocious flashes of violent mania, propelling this protagonist toward a cruel and captivating climax.

Don't waste your time...

I found this book to be just plain silly. A woman in a psych hospital for the criminally insane is soooo dangerous the staff keep a cloth over her face. Since her crazy eyes freak them out the material covers her eyes as well. When she escapes no one knows what she looks like because they've kept her like that for 10 YEARS....

4 stars for style, 2 for story

Mr. Clegg can WRITE. Unlike a lot of modern authors, he has some real skills, but his story is formulaic and oh-so-predictable. C’mon, Doug. You can do better than this!.

i was really hoping this would be a better story. the beginning started out great but by the middle everything was so predictable and the ending was just plain weird. Definitely not worth the credit!

Meh.

I dislike one of the protagonists to a really strong degree that is making it difficult for me to finish the book. It would have been a better story for me if the wife had been more likeable. Also, *why* do so many narrators pronounce "forward" as "foe-ward" instead of "for-ward"? Picky, I know, lol. Overall this one was better than listening to nothing, but still just a little disappointing.

Right up there with Silence of the Lambs only faster paced! Reading the rest of the series next. Highly recommend this book.

Great story.

Kept me wrapped up from the beginning. I had trouble putting it down. You know one of those "just one more chapter" books.

Standard Clegg

Good suspense novel. It held my interest and the characters were also interesting. There is a good amount of gore and definitely some twisted characters. Proceed with caution. Narration was standard. He was able to handle the different voices with ease.

Nice start

This book in and of itself was GREAT! I love the criminally insane aspect of it. The characters were very well written, and I quickly got to know them. The flow was good, and the plot heart-pounding. I especially loved the delusions, and how in detail they were. Really good book! I intend to read more.

The narrator was just okay, for me. Not bad, but not great, either. The tension and emotion just never seemed to be there, and it kind of pulled me out of the reverie. I feel like I would have connected more with the characters had I either read it myself or had a narrator more in tune with the book.

So, 5 for the book, 3 for narration, 4 overall.

TOTALLY CONSUMING FROM START TO FINISH

What made the experience of listening to Bad Karma the most enjoyable?

Liz Thompson is an excellent narrator. To me, the narration is the key to any audible book, but especially one that is as expertly written as Bad Karma.

What other book might you compare Bad Karma to and why?

The book that comes to mind is Mind's Eye by Douglas Richards, because of the way the main characters could "read" others in an unnatural way. Very compelling and mezmerizing.

Which character – as performed by Liz Thompson – was your favorite?

I think my favorite character was the villain Agnes. Given her history, it wasn't surprising she turned out like she did. I could almost feel her pain.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It often made me visualize Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs, except she had a drape over her face instead of a mask.

Any additional comments?

Hats off to Douglas Clegg! This is the kind of story that makes time fly by unnoticed. Keep up the good work. And my heartfelt thanks for choosing an excellent Narrator. Too many writers don't and, as a result, good books are ruined with bad translation.
