An inquisitive bachelor. A mysterious widow. A dangerous partnership in Regency London.

Idle heir to an earldom, Viscount Northwood drifts through life with little purpose—until a shocking murder shatters the calm of his quiet London square. His prime suspect? The beautiful but enigmatic widow across the way. Determined to uncover her secrets, North calls upon the investigative tricks he's learned from his Bow Street Runner twin.

Except anonymous broadsheets are circulating, exposing every lurid detail of the crime and bringing a crowd of intrusive onlookers into the square, complicating North's investigation. When he discovers the author of the scandalous publication is none other than the suspicious widow and that she is also apparently trying to solve the murder, they reluctantly join forces.

Their uneasy alliance is soon tested when the killer sets his sights on them. Can they trust each other in the face of danger, or will the murderer claim two more victims?

Jeremy Sheffield, Viscount Northwood, has just moved to Pemberton Square. He comes across a disturbed footman on his way home from a night out and offers assistance. When he enters the townhouse of Sir Radnor Fieldstone, he finds the man dead in his bedroom. North calls his brother Henry, the newly appointed coroner, and a Bow Street Runner. He meets Lady Hypatia Cartwright, a widow, friend of Fieldstone, and a suspect in the murder (it doesn’t help that he left her most of his wealth in his will). They dined together on occasion when they discussed literature. She was at the house on the night of the murder. She declares her innocence, and she and North set out to prove it and find the real culprit. Darcy Burke’s new mystery series is off to a great start. There are a lot of twists and turns, and the story holds your attention and keeps you guessing the murder’s identity right up to the surprising solution. Hypatia and North work well together even though she is a bit uneasy. North has little trouble letting go of his idle lifestyle and throws himself into the investigation, which surprises Henry who has always been the more serious brother. He, like Hypatia, keeps a wary eye on North. There is a hint of a future romance between North and Hypatia. Pemberton Square promises to be an interesting community. I look forward to more adventures with North, Hypatia, and their neighbors. Entertaining narration by Eilidh Beaton and Philip Battley.

I was so disappointed the narration of the brother’s book and only bought this one because the preview sounded so much better. The story, like the last one was great, made wonderful by these two gifted voice actors. I’m eagerly awaiting the next two books and I hope these two actors will be doing the narration again. Great job everyone!

GREAT NARRATORS!

I totally enjoyed this mystery with the perfect amount of intrique, murder & a slow-burn romance. Darcy Burke always delivers, and the dual narration was top notch. I hope to hear more in this series!
