Love

The book was really good. It felt a little more dull than the first book. I feel like the first book had a lot more tension. This book had it, but I was able to predict what was going on the ending was cute. I really enjoyed the book cannot wait for the third one.

I laughed, cried, and wanted to scream for these characters! Audiobook voiced perfectly, physical book absolutely stunning.

Kristin Cast has a way of pulling characters into the world that feels like a version of yourself, healing as they do through a fantastical and world shifting metamorphosis. Gemma is so much braver than I could imagine being, but every woman knows some of the challenges she faces. We may not be chased around a castle by a blood magic obsessed queen and her evil priest, but it’s easier to relate to her personal relationships. We probably all have a toxic ex that made us hopeful for too long. We’ve felt the hands of a man that only wanted to use our body. Most of us know how it feels to be “wanted” in a physical way, but not equally respected and valued as more than a body with curves. This story isn’t just about magick, it’s about the strength to risk everything for the sake of self respect and reliance. This story is about women refusing to back down, fighting against steel and the patriarchy when the injustice has gone on too long. A breathtakingly beautiful book full of mystery, romance, and the sweetest fruits. I am thrilled to continue into the world of Towerfall with the next books!

Didn't love

I'm honestly kind of confused by this book and would be unsurprised to find out that I somehow skipped several world building chapters (I didn't miss them, they just weren't there). I don't really understand what happened to the magic to make it disappear, or how the machine/mechanisms work. I also felt like the whole plot was crammed into the last 20% of the book.

I think there could have been some benefit from having a Lockhart POV chapter or two, from the perspective of someone native to the magic realm, to help explain the magic/issues plaguing the land AND to establish that there are two different dudes here. I knew there were two of them due to the synopsis on the back of the book, but it doesn't come up or be realized by the FMC at all until very late in the book. Too late, in my opinion, to fully establish a fully fleshed out love story.
