Like DCC, but less story & less character development

Discount Dan is about as close to Dungeon Crawler Carl as any series I've read, but this book does not develop its characters or deepen its plot as well as DCC. I didn't feel at all invested in the story or the characters until chapter 27 or so (1/2 way through). And after finishing chapter 51, I wasn't all that hooked for book 2 (which I bought alongside book 1). I still hold high hopes for this series though.

Discount Crawler Dan?

Came here from an Instagram ad comparing this series to DCC, all 7 current books of which I devoured in about a month’s span. I decided from the beginning that I would do my best to remove that comparison from my mind, which was difficult at first, and made it hard for me to render any opinion for about the first half of DDBB. By the second half of this book it really hits its stride, and I began to really enjoy the characters, the humor, and the setting immensely. At about that same time, I think any real comparisons to DCC become less and less relevant and Discount Dan firmly shows that it is treading its own path, and that becomes more apparent with every minute that passes. Can’t recommend this story enough.

Slightly Ridiculous and Seriously Entertaining

This book definitely takes inspiration from other LitRPGs like dungeon crawler Carl, but the author has his own ideas and a clear direction. Nothing is truly ripped off and instead has its own flavor or twist thrown onto it. Take a chance on this book! You won’t regret it.

Dungeon Crawlers meet BackRoom Delvers, your new best friends

Awesome book, highly recommend. What do you get when you combine 1 standard tool belt, a dog(that's not a dog), a splash of childhood nostalgia, and murderous violence? I give you Discount Dan.

If you loved Dungeon Crawler Carl you will really enjoy Discount Dan. Same type dark humor. Similar badass sentient pet that keeps me laughing. Different enough to stand apart. Give it a chance and you won't regret it.

I read Discount Dan with my LitRPG book club and had such a fun time with it! Right from the start, the story pulls you in with strong 90s nostalgia and nonstop action.
The Back Rooms were genuinely unsettling. The descriptions made them feel alive in the worst possible way, constantly shifting into new, horrendous scenarios.
Croc completely stole the show. Absolute the best boy. 🥰
Overall, this was a wild, nostalgic ride, and I’m really glad I picked it up with the group! Now I'm off to buy some Pogs...
