Martha Wells
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels.
All Systems Red tackles questions of the ethics of sentient robotics. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.
In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety.
But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn't a primary concern.
On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied 'droid - a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as "Murderbot."
Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.

I absolutely did not feel that way with this book. This was a fully realized world and story with a very well built main character despite its length.
I highly recommend it. I love murderbot now and can't wait to jump into the other books.
Its plot is interesting but It mainly focuses on the building and development of the main character murderbot. The plot does somewhat start to get interesting and ends fairly quickly once it gets started. This plot is meant to be short though and I can't imagine what it's be like if it was overly stretched out.
Overall, highly recommend it. Give a short novella a chance.
Absolutely amazing short story, worth it.

The story takes place in a distant future time when corporations and NGAs rule the universe and compete with each other for technical superiority and scarce, and sometimes dangerous, resources. The story is simply a logical extension of where we find ourselves today. Into this dystopian mix we find an exceptional character, part human and part machine, who has been able to free himself from the technical restraints his creators put in place. Ironically, this makes him more capable and more dedicated to his role as guardian of real humans who are exploring a new world. He calls himself "murderbot" because, as a Security Unit, SecUnit for short, that describes what he was designed to do, kill anyone who tries to harm those who have contracted with his corporation for SecUnit protection while they explore the new world. His personality is beyond shy with a slight tinge of autism. He does not understand humans and wants to avoid all emotional interaction. But he is curious and so he spends all is free time binge watching space operas, trying to understand human beings. At the start of the story we discover he is watching episode 397 of the "Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon". Far from being a murderous murderbot, his persona is more of an awkward modern teenager, interested in all things digital and unwilling to become part of the adult world - yet.
The first book of a very engaging series
