How will Artificial Intelligence affect crime, war, justice, jobs, society and our very sense of being human? The rise of AI has the potential to transform our future more than any other technology—and there’s nobody better qualified or situated to explore that future than Max Tegmark, an MIT professor who’s helped mainstream research on how to keep AI beneficial.

How can we grow our prosperity through automation without leaving people lacking income or purpose? What career advice should we give today’s kids? How can we make future AI systems more robust, so that they do what we want without crashing, malfunctioning or getting hacked? Should we fear an arms race in lethal autonomous weapons? Will machines eventually outsmart us at all tasks, replacing humans on the job market and perhaps altogether? Will AI help life flourish like never before or give us more power than we can handle?

What sort of future do you want? This book empowers you to join what may be the most important conversation of our time. It doesn’t shy away from the full range of viewpoints or from the most controversial issues—from superintelligence to meaning, consciousness and the ultimate physical limits on life in the cosmos.

The only complaint that I have about this book are the chapters where the author delves into human hating. He seems to think that humans desire to keep AI under control is akin to slavery and that is a bit rich. He blames all of humanity for the horrible things that a very small minority of our species have done.

If you are going to generalize about what humans do as a species, why not generalize that we all have an immense capacity for love and show it often. Humans by nature have apathy in a capacity not seen by any other species on this planet. There's a reason that the word "inhumane" is applied to any act that violates the values that define our species.

So, besides his human hating chapters, this book is an excellent read about what could and probably will happen with AI in the future. Let this book serve as a warning that gee-wiz technology could come back to haunt us all of we aren't responsible with it.

Despite human hating, it's a good book

Great book that covers both positive and negative potential of AI development. Max is even handed in his writing which is refreshing considering alarmist views are more popular today. Inspiring read for anyone wondering about a scientific argument for meaning in the universe and in life. Thanks Max for writing this it had a positive impact on my life. Also thanks to the narrator for delivering the book in such an accessible way and style.

Incredible book about hypothetical futures!

I wanted to learn more about the current state of AGI. I got what I wanted and so much more. This left me with a great deal of inspiration to feed my thoughts on theology, mortality, physics, community, individualism, and more.

Broader than expected

starts strong but gets repetitive towards the end. also, the last chapters where the authors are praising their own achievements ans how much they received funding are completely unnecessary.

strong beginning

Loved the clarity of mind brought to such a complex topic. Should be required reading at all colleges.
