Reign of Stars

By: Tim Pratt

Narrated by: Victor Bevine

When the leader of the ruthless Technic League calls in a favor, the mild-mannered alchemist Alaeron has no choice but to face a life he thought he'd left behind long ago. Accompanied by his only friend, a street-savvy thief named Skiver, Alaeron must head north into Numeria, a land where brilliant and evil arcanists rule over the local barbarian tribes with technology looted from a crashed spaceship. Can Alaeron and Skiver survive long enough to unlock the secrets of the stars? Or will the backstabbing scientists of the Technic League make Alaeron's curiosity his undoing?

a great sci fi fantasy

skiver is the best thing about this book. the characters are the real reward for this one. the way they grow and learn is just wonderful and the action and intrigue is just as good.

It's just okay

It was okay. The ending is anticlimactic and kind of dumb. Characters are kind of boring, but not completely.

Narrator

Victor Bevine is the best narrator I have ever listened to ever!!!!!!! In my opinion, he makes mediocre books phenomenal!!!!!!! I will listen to anything he narrates!

hilarious great adventure 1

I just wish it could have been longer. I want to drink with these blokes

A Great, Not-Exactly-Heroic, Buddy Adventure

This was a fun fantasy/sci-fi romp with likable characters (Alaeron the Alchemist and Skiver the Rogue), pulpy action, intrigue, and some very sly, very dry humor! Imagine Shane Black riffing on a Fritz Leiber story, with George Miller handling the action beats in set pieces designed by Moebius.

The book is packed with genuinely laugh-out-loud moments, and author Tim Pratt keeps the narrative engaging throughout. Especially clever are nods to rules in the Pathfinder RPG, such as details of Alaeron’s mutagen and other alchemical concoctions. The Numerian setting gets a ton of interesting color and lore along the way, making it both vivid and truly unique in the world of Golarion.
