On a mysterious errand for the Pathfinder Society, Count Varian Jeggare and his hellspawn bodyguard, Radovan, journey to the distant land of Tian Xia, on the far side of the world. When disaster forces him to take shelter in a warrior monastery, "Brother" Jeggare finds himself competing with the disciples of Dragon Temple as he unravels a royal mystery. Meanwhile Radovan - trapped in the body of a devil and held hostage by the legendary Quivering Palm attack - must serve a twisted master by defeating the land's deadliest champions and learning the secret of slaying an immortal foe. Together with an unlikely army of beasts and spirits, the two companions must take the lead in an ancient conflict that will carry them through an exotic land, all the way to the Gates of Heaven and Hell and a final confrontation with the nefarious Master of Devils!

Not as enjoyable as Prince of Wolves

I'm not sure if it was the Asian setting and wuxia style fight scenes or the submissive roles of the main characters through out the novel, but I had a difficult time maintaining interest.

Skip it anyway

The book is the origin of a bunch of little things that will come up in the next few books, but nothing you can't cope with not knowing. Most of what comes about in the book is forgotten, or retconned instantly.

It's not that I don't like wuxia and badly dubbed shaolin kung fu films, it's that this book sucks. The dog's part ends up being the best part and that's because it seems more like a Disney ripoff.

The series is good, and you'll get far more enjoyment out of the next book along.

It's fine

It's not bad. Nothing really exciting happens, even in combat scenes, but it's never really boring. The voices were pretty good.

Ok but with issues!

Overall I liked it but the talking dog parts were horrible! Remove them & I’d add a star.

Cant believe its rated so highly

I love most of the pathfinder tale novels but this one was like some just tried to rewrite crouching tiger hidden dragon with pathfinder characters and did a not so great job. I love Prince of Wolves but now im afraid to get the next in the series.

Boring nonsense

This book just doesn’t work. It is written from the point of view of several characters, which is fine. It reads like a combination of: (1) a travel log written by a pompous aristocrat; (2) a bunch of stories by a drunk about getting his ass kicked yet somehow winning his fights anyway; and (3) a particularly long Aesop fable told by a dog. This combination doesn’t work. The story styles are too inconsistent and different, so nothing really flows or comes together.

In addition, the author’s obvious fascination with Asian culture borders on the fetishistic. The Asian characters are not people so much people as props for the author’s kung fu fan fiction.

The only good part of this book is the reader. He truly does a masterful job with what he’s been given.

Wow! what a tale!

I loved these characters when they were first introduced in The Prince of Wolves, and this story had multiple branching plots that tied together neatly and in interesting ways!

Character jumps.

Jumped between the character's stories a bit, but was interesting how they made it work.
