Laura Nichols was always up for a challenge and the job Justin Roman has offered her is the perfect showcase for her talents. Not only was he dubious of her ability to complete the restoration of his Louisiana mansion in time for his wedding, but she was also frustrated by his arrogance tempered only by his good looks. But if he is so doubtful of her then why does he give her full artistic license even when it obviously angers his fiancée?

Laura dives into the job, determined to prove the maddening man wrong. But when the job reaches completion Laura finds herself torn, she would like nothing more than to be rid of this mess, but she can't deny the attraction she feels for Justin. Will she be able to tear herself away from a man who is to be married in her greatest creation?

For a 40 year old story, it was interesting to experience a slightly different time. The most notable being the absence of cell phones and computers. The main character Laura is 22 and knows a lot of detailed information about old southern houses and other history. In modern times we have all that information readily available for free any time. For her, she would have had to actually learn and memorize all the details required to do her job! The author really gives us a lot of information about the subjects by way of Laura and her mom. I feel bad for anyone reading this in 1980 who couldn’t just look up pictures of what a Mallard bed is instantly like I did.

The narrator was good but her voice is a bit whispery, and relaxing, so if you listen to this in a comfortable chair or bed you might doze off. It’s not boring, just relaxing!

I couldn’t get past the narrator to hear to story. I had to stop. It’s worth the investment to pay a good one.
