Publisher's summary

From the bestselling author of A Killer’s Wife, Victor Methos’s acclaimed Desert Plains series continues with the saga of two brilliant defense attorneys and a client whose confession may not be what it seems.

Two couples cut to bits near a canyon close to the Nevada border. The police pull over blood-soaked Arlo Ward not far from the site of the grisly murders; he fully cooperates with the officers, grinning through a remorseless confession dripping with gory detail. Investigators find no murder weapon, but young, awkward Arlo’s confession is signed, taped, and delivered.

Defense attorney Dylan Aster and his partner, Lily Ricci, are two rising legal stars. They’re hesitant about pursuing the Arlo Ward case, as it seems like a slam dunk for the prosecution - Arlo was covered in the victims’ DNA and admitted to everything. But the state psychiatrist shares the impossible with Dylan: Arlo Ward is likely innocent. The man is racked with delusional schizophrenia, seizing on these murders as an opportunity for macabre attention.

Dylan can’t resist. He and Lily take on Arlo as their client, but once the trial commences, it’s clear that the real secrets and lies are just beginning.

This needed a review

While I read 3 to 4 books a week, I'm not an adept reviewer. However, this book needed a couple of words.

If you're already a fan, you're going to love this story by Methos. While it's labeled as part of the original series with Jessica Yardley, this has a new cast of characters w/ cameos from the first 2 books.

The new characters are well developed and true to Methos this isn't only a legal thriller wrapped up in procedure. There is a lot of heart in this book as you get to know the characters. Their stories are engaging and real. It was fast paced w/ both courtroom drama as well as personal drama.

What prompted me to write this review was the ending. I was very pleasantly surprised. I thought I had I figured out, I didn't.

Unrelated to first 2 books, premise/outcome unoriginal

Was quite disappointed in this latest installment of the series, which does nothing to advance the story of Jessica Yardley and her daughter. What’s more, the plot of this novel is way too reminiscent of a certain cult film, so the way the case develops is disappointing. Will still look forward to a future installment featuring the original main characters, but this book shouldn’t have been listed as book 3 of the series.

HORRIBLE NARRATOR

I pre ordered this book because I enjoy all of the stories I’ve read so far by this author, BUT this narrator made it almost impossible to like the story as good as the story was the narrator was horrible.

Poor narration

I almost didn't listen ri this book because of the narrator. He spoke very slowly with exceedingly long pauses. It was painful. His women's voice just made them sound dumb (finding this is common amongst men narrators... hope this isn't how they really perceive women! ). Also, the narrator used the same voice for many characters and sometimes forgot to change to the correct voice. This made me have to listen more carefully, and sometimes replay something.
I increased the speed and was able to get thru the book. The story was interesting and I'm glad I finished the book.

Wow!

Great character development, great story and great narrator. In my opinion, this is the best book in the series so far. The legal twists and turns culminate in a totally unexpected ending!
Highly recommend.

A book you must read!

Victor Methos can write one hell of a legal thriller! I have loved his books from the 1st one I read. His books keep me reading until I finish. I love to whisper sync a book, reading and listening when I can’t just read along. The narrator, Arnell Powell did an excellent job! This book was not what I expected. I loved the defense attorneys… this is a book you should not miss!

On the edge…kept me right there.

Ok I will be the first to admit I don’t care to do book reviews. But this one is different. It covered the human flaws, strengths, mental deceit and disorders. The judicial system in it’s greatness and it’s abuse. The whole story grabs you, sucks you in and then twists you up. This is one of my new favorites and for me that is saying something as I read between 8 & 10 (sometimes more) books a month.

Excessive breaks in narration are distracting and unnatural

Loved the story but the excessively long and often random spaces of silence between sentences is unnatural and distracting. Not sure if that was an editing function or the choice of the narrator. In either case it diminished the enjoyment of the book.
