FINALIST: The Audie Awards 2016
This was to be her last day alive. The renowned criminal psychologist Ira Samin prepared her suicide thoroughly. The death of her eldest daughter had weighed too heavily on her conscience for her to carry on and she yearned for one last drink to raise a toast to oblivion. Her morbid plans are interrupted and she is called in to negotiate a gruesome hostage situation at a radio station where a psychopath is playing a morbid game.
While the show is on air, he calls people from the phonebook at random. If they pick up the phone with a certain slogan, a hostage is set free. If they don't, then the hostage is unceremoniously shot. The man threatens to continue playing this game until his fiancée arrives at the studio. The only problem is that his fiancée died several months ago....
AMOK is a gripping audiodrama and tense psychological hostage thriller set in a Berlin Radio Station, from the internationally renowned author of the best-selling Audible Original Drama The Child.

Who was your favorite character and why?
The dad of the missing woman (I'm bad with names). I listened to him and knew that voice. Finally after it was bugging me too much, I had to go back and look it up and Boom! I was right....it was Brendan Coyle from Downton Abbey.....GREAT reader...probably the best of the group in my opinion. What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
Loved the different characters....made it a split of tv and radio....kept my interest.Any additional comments?
Worth a listen. It might take you a bit to get into, but just let the book work on you. At first the music and sound effects were a little distracting but I think that was mostly because I'm not used to listening to a book that has that stuff.....so if you feel like it's a little corny, just push through...eventually you're ears will acclimate and you're going to love the read. :)Great Listen

Any additional comments?
I started out liking this book a lot. A killer takes over a radio station and threatens to kill people on air, an alcoholic hostage negotiator gets pressed into service against her will. It works well as a novel/radio drama (a little weak as a radio drama with so much narration). Without any spoilers, the whole thing goes pear-shaped when the relationships of all the characters is revealed, the motivations, and the "surprise twists". It really begins to amount to reader abuse, and if there aren't author prisons for it we need a new Hammurabi.I suppose the good news is that most of it gets irritating in the last two hours or so. The rest was fairly interesting. I guess there was a clue to how things might go at the beginning where she decides to get a diet Coke with lemon (only the Germans, ammi right?) and ends up in a gun standoff in a store. Her former lover shows up in full uniform, shoots up the place, and drags her off to the hostage negotiations with barely a whisper about what happens to the people he shot.I wish they had given a better list of the voice actors. Most do a wonderful job. I felt a little sorry for the actress of the main character (Natascha McElhone) who, as an alcoholic, someone under pressure, and a woman having to talk about the death of a child ends up having to sniffle her way through most of the book. But in general the actors have the least blame in a really disappointing audio book.
