"Whether by design or by chance," Terryl and Fiona Givens write, "we find ourselves in a universe filled with mystery. We encounter appealing arguments for a Divinity that is a childish projection, for prophets as scheming or deluded imposters, and for scripture as so much fabulous fiction. But there is also compelling evidence that a glorious Divinity presides over the cosmos, that His angels are strangers we have entertained unawares, and that His word and will are made manifest through a sacred canon that is never definitively closed."

That was 200 years ago. As the Restoration enters its third century, the world has new questions. A loving God has answers. In Restoration, scholar and author Patrick Mason reflects on what it means for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to participate in the ongoing Restoration.

Story
Givens examines the Book of Mormon first and foremost in terms of the claims that its narrators make for its historical genesis, its purpose as a sacred text, and its meaning for an audience which shifts over the course of the history it unfolds. The author traces five governing themes in particular - revelation, Christ, Zion, scripture, and covenant - and analyzes the Book's central doctrines and teachings. Givens also provides samples of a cast of characters that number in the hundreds, and analyzes representative passages.

I specifically thought about the current crisis catering on rejecting behavior towards the queer Latter-day Saints.

Compared to the Puritans, Mormons have rarely gotten their due, often treated as fringe cultists or marginalized polygamists unworthy of serious examination. In Kingdom of Nauvoo, Benjamin E. Park excavates the brief, tragic life of a lost Mormon city, demonstrating that the Mormons are essential to understanding American history writ large. Using newly accessible sources, Park re-creates the Mormons' 1839 flight from Missouri to Illinois.

Publisher's Summary
Robert MacFarlane has written that language does not just register experience, it produces it. Our religious language in particular informs and shapes our understanding of God, our sense of self, and the way we make sense of our challenging path back to loving heavenly parents. Unfortunately, to an extent we may not realize, our religious vocabulary has been shaped by prior generations whose creeds, in Joseph Smith's words, have filled the world with confusion. I make all things new, proclaimed the Lord. Regrettably, many are still mired in the past, in ways we have not recognized.
In this audiobook, Fiona and Terryl Givens trace the roots of our religious vocabulary, explore how a flawed inheritance compounds the wounds and challenges of a life devoted to discipleship, and suggest ways of reformulating our language in more healthy ways all in the hope that, as B. H. Roberts urged, we may all cooperate in the works of the Spirit to find a truer expression of a gospel restored.

I loved this book. I need to get a print version so I can properly cite passages. may the Givens continue to write and speak and continue to enlighten. Sin isn't cause for punishment - it is need for healing from The Healer. Righteousness isn't a solitary endeavor, it is being with and strengthening others, just as Jesus heals and comforts us.

Absolutely incredible, transformative book!
Fiona and Terryl teach so beautifully the plain and precious things that have been lost and need to be found again in order for our faith to become transformational. Transactional faith rots and dies, while transformative faith grows and multiplies. I love the reframing of sin back to the original woundedness. Christ is our healer. He taught two commandments centered on love. Love, not obedience for reward, should be the reason we are motivated in all we do. Only this will truly transform us into becoming more like Christ.

All things new, indeed
I appreciate a new view of my Heavenly parents that more aligns with my experience. The god who in scripture says, “in my fierce wrath” or “in mine anger” wasn’t the voice I heard speaking directly to my spirit. God was kind, patient and their love vast and indescribable. I want to become like them, I want charity and all the rest of those attributes. Heaven, “making it” the Celestial Kingdom for me is becoming as they are. “For we shall be like them.”

I benefited more from this book then I ever imagined I would. It breathed new life into my fading faith. I look with new eyes upon the beautiful truths of the Restoration, and all truth for that matter. I plan to do a more in depth study of the concepts presented in in this book in order that I might soften the blow of scrupulosity in my life and free myself from a prison of perfectionism.

Definitely worthwhile
Reading (or listening not overly distracted) this work is like cleaning a dirty lens by clarifying truths of Christianity we are probably familiar with but get soiled by numerous influences we may hardly be aware of. This work is a great contribution to show the ongoing process of Restoration as both personal and institutional and where Reformation is not Restoration. It elucidates at least some of the "plain and precious" eternal truths that have been lost to the world at large and are now available to us through the ongoing work of Restoration; and most importantly what that means to us in our daily lives and relationships to everyone and everything- essentially being healed through the love of God. The narration by Fiona Givens is excellent.

Beautiful
This is the second book I have listened to by the Givens. This, like "The God Who Weeps" was beautiful, clarifying and thought-provoking. It is quite cerebral, I found that I had to give it my full attention to comprehend the concepts being examined and taught. This book helped me to reframe a lot of the myths that I had formerly absorbed about God, sin and Atonement and showed me that God is more inline with my own experiences and understanding of our relationship with them and how They really are. I love Fiona's reading of the book, she gives the words greater meaning and heart.

Informative, yet "Academic"
I wanted to give this book a higher rating, but it lacks something I can't quite put my finger on. The historical foundation is well versed, and there's plenty of content to digest, but I found myself reading in short bursts. I wanted to dive in, read it cover to cover, before coming up for air; reaching for the emotional connection throughout. All things considered, this is a book I would recommend.
