Story
Acuff knows the reason why many writers' novels go unfinished - it's the same reason why gyms are filled in the first week of January and empty by the end of the month and why people stop learning a new language once they get past the easy parts. It's not just that people lose momentum or get distracted. People give up on projects when they fail to live up to their own high expectations and decide that if they can't do something perfectly, they won't do it at all. If you're going to finish, you have to kill perfectionism.

Story
Overthinking isn't a personality trait. It's the sneakiest form of fear. It steals time, creativity, and goals. It's the most expensive, least productive thing companies invest in without even knowing it. And it's an epidemic. When New York Times best-selling author Jon Acuff changed his life by transforming his overthinking, he wondered if other people might benefit from what he discovered. He commissioned a research study to ask 10,000 people if they struggle with overthinking too, and 99.5 percent said, "Yes!"

Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point: really hard, and not much fun at all. And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you're in a Dip: a temporary setback that you will overcome if you keep pushing. But maybe it's really a Cul-de-Sac, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.

We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Publisher's summary
What if you could have a fulfilling career, a thriving marriage, strong friendships, and rewarding hobbies, all while being in the best shape of your life? What if every day you lived was better than the one before? What if tapping into your potential wasn't as hard as you think?
According to New York Times bestselling author Jon Acuff, it might not be. In fact, All It Takes Is a Goal. In his ninth book, he shows you how to plan goals that you're guaranteed to reach by focusing on your best moments, navigating the three zones of performance, and finding ways to fuel your passions, all while actually enjoying the ride.
Sound too good to be true? Jon thought so too. Until it happened—again and again—for him and the hundreds of real people in his research project. Whether your goals are personal, relational, or career-driven, the key to a better future is closer than you think.
Critic reviews
"Productivity expert Jon Acuff narrates his latest audiobook with spontaneity and energy that are absolutely infectious. Part of what makes him connect so strongly with his audience is his frequent use of off-script asides and personal stories--what he calls 'bonus content.' These impromptu comments, delivered enthusiastically, never fail to energize and entertain." (AudioFile)

Story
There are 168 hours in a week. This book is about where the time really goes, and how we can all use it better. It's an unquestioned truth of modern life: we are starved for time. With the rise of two-income families, extreme jobs, and 24/7 connectivity, life is so frenzied we can barely find time to breathe. We tell ourselves we'd like to read more, get to the gym regularly, try new hobbies, and accomplish all kinds of goals.

Story
Do you ride the escalator or do you take the stairs? No matter how you define success, it always requires one thing: self-discipline. But as popular speaker and strategist Rory Vaden explains, we live in an "escalator world", one that's filled with shortcuts, quick fixes, and distractions that make it all too easy to slide into procrastination, compromise, and mediocrity. What seems like an easier path is really much harder in the end - and, most important, it won't take you where you want to go.

As high achievers, we’ve been conditioned to believe that the path to success is paved with relentless work. That if we want to overachieve, we have to overexert, overthink, and overdo. That if we aren’t perpetually exhausted, we’re not doing enough. But lately, working hard is more exhausting than ever. And the more depleted we get, the more effort it takes to make progress. Stuck in an endless loop of “Zoom, eat, sleep, repeat”, we’re often working twice as hard to achieve half as much.

There are four characters in every story: the victim, the villain, the hero, and the guide. These four characters live inside us. If we play the victim, we’re doomed to fail. If we play the villain, we will not create genuine bonds. But if we play the hero or guide, our lives will flourish. The hard part is being self-aware enough to know which character we are playing. In this book, Donald will use his own experiences to help you recognize if the character you are currently surfacing is helping you experience a life of meaning.

People give up on projects when they fail to live up to their own high expectations and decide that if they can't do something perfectly, they won't do it at all.

Best Book on Goals I've Come Across
The book is a must listen to book and it will help you understand how to go from easy goals to guaranteed goals by focusing on simple daily tasks like completing an action tracker.
“If you put in real effort, the results are math, not a miracle.” -Jon Acuff
Jon Acuff's “Best Moments List” activity taught me that the best moments in my life took real work and started off with small daily and weekly actions that resulted in success over time.
Acuff’s narration and special “audiobook only” content is priceless. I caught myself laughing out loud as I listened to some of the examples he shared, and I know that his lessons will stick with me because of his sense of humor!

Another good one
It is not often that an audio book is better than the paperback, but when you have the author (a professional public speaker) reading it, that's what you get. Jon is the man, so glad to have been able to hear him speak in San Antonio last year, and then listen to his books. Two thumbs up!

Hits you right where you are!
Once again, Jon hit me right between the eyes and in the heart with this one. His humor and well-crafted ideas become increasingly more relevant to my life the older I get. Homerun, A+, thoroughly enjoyed this, and I’m motivated to find and stay in the potential zone!

As always Excellent
This one is about creating momentum towards accomplishing goals.
I am coming away from it with a desire to be more intentional in repeat activities that work towards a larger goal (what he calls “middle goals”)
And
To intentionally build in “easy goals” into my days to salvage the feeling of “ehhhh” that comes with a day that got hijacked by a big project.
I always come away from Jon’s books smiling and grateful that I get to share the earth with him and his work.

Where has this book been all my life?
Jon is every bit as engaging reading the audio version of his book as he is on his podcast! Too many gold nuggets to list individually, so I strongly suggest you read it… then set those goals! You won’t be sorry!
