Publisher's summary

This program is read by the author.

In a series of personal essays, prominent journalist and LGBTQIA+ activist George M. Johnson explores his childhood, adolescence, and college years in New Jersey and Virginia. From the memories of getting his teeth kicked out by bullies at age five, to flea marketing with his loving grandmother, to his first sexual relationships, this young-adult memoir weaves together the trials and triumphs faced by Black queer boys.

Both a primer for teens eager to be allies as well as a reassuring testimony for young queer men of color, All Boys Aren't Blue covers topics such as gender identity, toxic masculinity, brotherhood, family, structural marginalization, consent, and Black joy. Johnson's emotionally frank style of writing will appeal directly to young adults.

A unique point of view, and narrative not nearly told enough. A coming of age story steeped in nuance and identity.

READ THIS BOOK!

It is for everyone. I read it because it was on the list of proposed books to ban from the Catawba County schools. Being 70+ years old, I was totally surprised how much I would learn and enjoy it. Besides that it was beautifully written, there are incredibly important lessons for people of all ages and backgrounds but I've come to see it is particularly criticalfor educators to read it so they understand many different PERSPECTIVES. Thank you George M. Johnson.

great read for those in the queer community!!

I wish it was around when I was coming up. the honesty is what is needed. growing up attempting to find yourself is hard but having a community or simply people that are present for advice help and protection is key.

I learned so much

As a LGBTQIA+ ally, it was important to take a deep dive into George M. Johnson’s story. To say I learned so much is an understatement. Thank you for being so vulnerable and taking us along with you, George. I laughed, cried, was angry, proud, and so many other emotions as I read. This was an amazing journey!

An intimate and illuminating book

I hope that this book is available in all middle school libraries for all to read. A book like this, raw and heartbreaking, gentle and joyful should be required reading for all of us gay or straight, young or old. I am a 60 year old white Cis woman.
