Publisher's summary

From the world of Rylee Adamson and the Elemental series comes a heroine with nothing to lose and everything to prove....

“My name is Pamela, and I am a witch who has no equal.”

Or so I thought.

It has been three years since the Destroyer sundered our world. The land is longer whole, but broken into pieces, most technology gone, and the continents shattered into an unrecognizable place.

New monsters have risen from the depths, adding danger on top of danger. Through it all, the humans fight to survive as they compete not only with the supernaturals for food and resources, but their own kind as well.

And me? The caravans of humans I pass - they look to me to save them.

Only I am not the witch I once was. Bound by those who fear my power and my bloodline, I’m lucky if I can light a match with my magic, never mind protect anyone but myself.

Now the darkness in me rises, offering me all that I want. Freedom from the chains I wear and the power to make everything right. But, if I embrace the darkness, I will face a cost I could never have imagined....

Aimless finds a family

Aimless Witch takes up where Larkspur’s & Rylee’s ends...this book can be enjoyed without having read/listened to the two other series, but if you want to understand the references start with the Rylee Adamson series followed by the Elemental Series (Larkspur). This story has plenty of action, self discovery, and pure entertainment. Love this series already! The narrator did a fantastic job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene!

Enjoyable!

The author presumes that we've read the previous books in the universe - so some of the set-up is confusing. However, it is not difficult to follow. I enjoyed the ramble through the wilds of a broken earth and all the various creatures and problems the heroine encounters. It did not go exactly where I expected it to go, given the set up for the story; however, I feel like we'll learn more later.

-Spoilery Bits -

I did not believe the heroine's age. Pamela's supposed to be 15-18 during the course of the book, but she definitely comes across as much older. At least mid-twenties - and this is not because of the narrator's voice, but what the character says and her level of emotional intelligence - especially in her interactions with other women. It did make sense that she be competent, self-sufficient, and a survivor - but her savvy with other people was difficult to swallow. Also, while her young life has been full of adventure, she thinks / talks like she's seen sixty years worth of experience, not 18 - so that was difficult; however, when I managed to forget her age, the novel was fine.

The friction between Pamela and the other female characters was a bit of an issue for me. Even when Pamela struggles with male characters, it seems less toxic, less dangerous. The only truly positive female relationship she has is with her cat familiar. The three positive relationships she had with other females not intimately connected to her are completely dashed each time - the first dying, the second acrimonious and dying, and the last ending in turmoil for no good reason at all - that the last two are acrimonious - given what Pamela has done for those characters up to that point - is nonsensical. Needless conflict is always aggravating and it's something I find in a lot of urban fantasy novels, specifically. It's frustrating.

Speaking of positive female relationships - my favorite parts of the novel involved her cat. I would read a novel just about that cat any day. They disagreed constantly, but still managed to maintain their relationship.

The author did not really address the main character's relationship to how the earth came to be broken. I suspect that might have been from one of her other series or will be addressed (I hope) later in other books. I'd be willing to listen to book 2 except for the dreaded spectre of a love-triangle on the horizon. That is a major turn-off for me, personally - so I hope the author avoids it in the interest of more character-building and believable romance in the future novel.

Definitely not the worst novel I've encountered and the narrator did a wonderful job. In tone and pacing, it's a typical urban fantasy or YA fantasy novel: plucky heroine with too much sass and a lot of rage faces all kinds of issues and insists on doing it herself, all alone, every time until she learns that it's better to let people in and work together --- until book 2. The world building was the most intriguing part, but we learn very little of the actual world or what happened to the humans after the earth is broken. Given that the novel is set in the far north, one wonders what has happened to the rest of the world.

With more time and detail, this could have been a really strong book, but it's got a few major flaws. Still - that said, it's fun! And worth a listen!

Another Shannon Mayer series to fall in love with

When a favorite author starts a new series, it can be a scary experience for readers. What if it's not as good as her past books? What if I don't like it? You can put those fears aside with Shannon Mayer.

Khristine Ham does a stellar job narrating this book. She's truly fabulous and I love her English accent.

"Do you know who the fuck I am!?"

Yes, Pamela, thankfully I do :)
I'm a huge Shannon Mayer fan and this was an excellent addition to her amazingness. The narrator did an excellent job, I don't think we could have gotten any better.
As usual, Shannon managed to leave me satisfied and yet, thirsty for the next book. You'll definitely want to be caught up to fully enjoy the story.

Loved it!

I loved returning to this world and listening to it from Pamela’s view. Seeing the aftermath of what has happened is chilling and it was such an addicting listen! So much happens and plenty of action to keep me engaged.
The narrator, Khristine Hvam did a wonderful job portraying Pamela and her accent. She also did a wonderful job portraying other characters as well.

Intriguingly magical!

Great plot & a wonderful magic system that leaves the reader interested to learn more! The author seems to picture magic on multiple levels like "real world" history views of magic, but on a larger scale that even surpasses the imagination of even higher magical beings. Leading the tough, smart & caring female lead to discover more about herself & her own trials.

I think the author also does a great job keeping to the storyline while incorporating other characters without going off on random tangents such as love interests or plot build ups. The reader learns what they need to know without getting to much to fast, or being bored to death & thinking "that took way to long". I personally couldn't get enough and can't wait to start the next book!

Amazing, but feels like it starts in the middle

It’s a little odd for the intro to say “Untitled”, but not terribly off-putting. It feels like it’s starting in the middle of a story and although the backstory is hinted at, it still feels awkward. Not my favorite start to a book. I have read most of the Rylee and Lark books and I know a bit about the backstory because of that, but even with that knowledge I had to check to see if somehow the recording had jumped ahead or something. It just didn’t feel like a smooth start of a new series.
I had to stop and go through the Elemental series. It makes a huge difference and makes this book make a lot more sense. It picks up after Destroyer and is a much smoother story that way.
The narrator does a great job with all of the voices, but I love the voice for Oka the most. Even after reading several of Shannon Mayer’s books, she still continues to surprise me. The story doesn’t feel like a re-hashed version of her other books. Everything is still fresh and new. Her world-building is fantastic! I really enjoy the progression of Pam’s story and how she deals with her struggles. She feels real and relatable. She doesn’t feel like a natural-born hero type character that can’t be beaten. She feels like a typical young-ish, possibly teenage girl, with general life struggles. There just happens to be magic thrown in. Very well-written story overall.
Almost at the end of the book and I’m choking up, then heart swelling with joy, and finally full body shivers and feelings of apprehension. Shannon does an amazing job of drawing out all kinds of feelings from her readers, keeping us hooked and wanting more. I can’t wait to start the next book!

Aimless Witch

Great story well read on the whole but Americans should not try to do English accents.

A great start

This is the first in the spin-off series following Pamela as she makes her way in a new world. We start to get an appreciation for the young witch & understand her much more. There are some common themes running through that Shannon’s following will hold close & I urge new readers to give this one a try. Being a native Brit, the narration at times can be a little jarring in pronunciation, but Khristine gives a good performance, irrespective, and there’s a lot of feeling to it.

Great Start to the Questing Witch Series

Having loved both the Rylee and Elemental series it was lovely to read about Pamela and join her on her journey. Amazing story with plenty of action, lots of new characters and that ending just has me wanting more. Khristine Hvam who narrated the audiobook perfected Pamela’s English accent. Loved every minute of it.

Spectacular

A spectacular story from Shannon Mayer. Pam and Oca’s story is brilliant, gripping, heart wrenching tale from beginning to end with vivid, memorable characters. A book you can’t put down, can’t wait to listen to next one.
