Cameron Winter is falling in love. After finally working up the courage to contact the attractive therapist Gwendolyn Lord, he finds himself immersed in a passion that feels heaven-sent. When Gwendolyn tells him about a true-life "locked room mystery," Winter feels compelled to investigate.

In Tulsa, Oklahoma, a solid citizen named Owen McKay suddenly went mad and killed his wife and child. Locked in a padded cell and monitored on video, he was nonetheless discovered dead from a projectile fired into his head. As Winter begins to ask questions, he finds Tulsa officials have been intimidated into silence by a killer who once tried to attack Winter during his days as a government assassin. What's more, another mysterious death, just like McKay's, has taken place in Connecticut. And both murders seem linked to a sinister billionaire who once clashed with Winter's old mentor, the Recruiter.

Winter's past and present are coming together in a single dangerous conspiracy. And though Winter desperately wants to escape his career as an assassin, his love for Gwendolyn is deepening quickly and he will do anything—and kill anyone—to protect her.

Utterly gripping novel. Masterful work, with depth and brilliance. Only complaint is that I finished the book so fast because I couldn’t put it down and now I have to wait until the next one!

The most suspenseful yet of the Cameron Winter series. Very intense and an excellent, cathartic listen!

Best one so far!

I just listened to Klavan's "After That, the Dark." My fiction genre is almost exclusively thrillers, legal thrillers, police procedures, etc., including the classics,Ike Crime and Punishment, and Noir. And I am not exaggerating when I say this book just released is the best thriller I've ever read. The characters, the dialogue, mood, the darkness... so scary, but there's humor and goodness, and light, too. I can't count the number of lines that were just exquisite to read, or funny and made me laugh outloud. And wow, you've never met a killer like this one. The humanity the despair, the tenderness, the plot. My eyes are old enough where they prefer audible, but for the sheer pleasure of it, I'm going buy the book. It's late, and I don't have the words to do this book justice, but thank you, Andrew Klavan. Many of my favorite series' authors have gone woke and want to preach snd condescend. I'm a Christian, and though Klavan is, too, he doesn't. He draws you in and seduces you with words that make you fall in love with and really like Cameron Winter, and really hate the bad guys, and the way he builds tension by repeating phrases in sections is just so good and not like any book I've ever read. And I'm asking God to let Andrew feel His pleasure and pride in how his kid's used the tremendous gift God's given him. 🥰👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Andrew Klavan's Masterpiece

Excellent and unique characters and dialogue. I have all 5 Cameron Winter books & have grown to care a lot about “Poetry Man” and his strange habit of mind. This was a great listen maybe the best of the 5 so far. I hope Andrew has some more tales to tell of our hero and his new love.
