Publisher's Summary

Peter Mayle and his wife had been to Provence as tourists. They had dreamed of one day trading the long, grey winters and damp summers of England for the blue skies and sunshine of the coast of southern France. And then they made it happen. They moved into an old farmhouse at the foot of the Luberon mountains and embarked on a wonderful, if at times bewildering, new life.

Among their experiences that first year: being inundated with builders and visitors, grappling with the native accent, taking part in goat races and supervising the planting of a new vineyard.

Now, Peter Mayle personally recounts the pleasures and frustrations of Provençal life - sharing in a way no one else can, the unique and endearing culture that is Provence.

Ban abridged versions

I love this story in its full length. I was not paying attention when I got this version and am irritated when I listen to it. The edits are very abrupt and part of the enjoyment of this book is meandering through their year, not racing through like a fire sale.
It would be 5 star unabridged.

Awful editing

Love the story. Love the writing. Love the narration.

Horrid, awful, sudden, jerking editing. There is no pause between stories or chapters. It's disconcerting. Like whiplash.

Only includes the first three chapters

Why didn’t I look closer before purchasing this audiobook? Who knows, but I didn’t expect it to only include one fourth of the book.

A Year in Provence

Maybe this book would have been interesting, or at least better, if I had read it as opposed to listening to the audio-book. I couldn't get past 30 minutes because it is pretentious tripe, at least as read by the author.
I would not recommend this to anyone.

Masterpiece. I'm booking my tickets to Provence!

Peter Mayle is one of my all-time favorite writers, AND, one of life's greatest pleasures is hearing him narrate this amazing novel. I honestly, after reading this book, am planning a trip to Provence this spring, and will be sure to go through the printed version to take note of each and every town, restaurant, bakery, etc he mentions.

His writing is so incredibly playful, funny, witty, and colorful. He is a huge inspiration to me. He makes me fall in love with the French countryside all over again (I spent a lot of time there as a child.) I just love this book, and love this writer. I can't wait to make my way through the rest of the Peter Mayle collection. Bravo for this masterpiece, Monsieur Peter!

Makes You Want to Move Now!!

What a funny, sweet, witty, and loveable gang of characters! Provence, remote in it's location, is anything but boring in its people and weather. May we all be so lucky to experience it ourselves someday!!

Gastronomically Wonderful

Wonderfully humorous describing the lifestyle of Provence and the character of its residents along with the adaptation of an English couple to their new environment. A good read!

An Absolute Treasure!

A rich, vibrant story whose well written prose transports you, with delicious humor, to the unique landscape of French Culture... The stories come alive in your mind with much hilarious laughing out loud. I developed an even deeper love and regard for the French. Peter Mayle is a gifted storyteller. I will listen again and again.

Wonderful, fun and relaxing

I love a good book, especially one that you can relax and enjoy. Beyond the simple fun of the story, the amazing detail, and how hungry I became as I listened to the descriptions... this is the kind of book that reminds one of how fun casual reading can be!
