Publisher's summary

For listeners who love a heartwarming romance and a rich historical setting comes a tale of a young woman with a heavy burden, the International Cotton Exposition, and the pursuit of true love.

Eighteen-year-old Laurel Millard, youngest of seven children, is expected to stay home and "take care of Mama" by her older siblings, but Laurel has dreams of starting her own family. Operating a silk loom at the Atlanta Exposition will give her the chance to capture the heart of a man wealthy enough to take care of Laurel and any children she might bear, as well as her mother.

Brendan Rochester's parents have given him an ultimatum: settle down with a wife or lose his family inheritance. At the Exposition, Brendan meets Laurel. Marrying her would satisfy his parents's command, she would look lovely on his arm for social events, and in her besotted state, he believes she would overlook him continuing pursuing rowdy adventures with his unmarried buddies. Brendan decides to woo Laurel.

Willie Sharp is not well-off and must take on an extra job at the Atlanta Exposition as a security guard. When mischief-makers cause trouble in the Women's Building, Willie is put in charge of keeping the building secure. He enjoys visiting with Laurel, who seems like the little sister he never had, but his feelings for Laurel change to something much deeper. Can Willie convince Laurel that he can give her a better life - even with so little to offer?

I’ve read a lot of books by this author

Ive read several books by this author and this book was harder to get into than most. Unless I missed it, was the mystery of who stole the money solved? It didn’t feel as though Laurel and Willie had enough time to build their relationship before they a couple! This author is one of my favorites this just was not my favorite book of hers.

Outcome was predictable

Although the ending was predictable, I enjoyed the narrator. The view of our country's history during this time period was poignant considering what is happening in today's world. The belief of making the right decision by trusting your faith gives one hope.

Enjoyed the history!

I enjoyed learning about Atlanta cotton expo. The story was a bit slow moving. The ending didn't seem to bring closure to all the issues. I'll definitely read Kim Vogel Sawyer's books again.

Wonderful

I absolutely loved this story! I live near Atlanta and found it so interesting and want to do some research. The characters were perfect and Pilar is one of my favorite narrators.

So Slow

This book has great potential, but it so slow before anything happens to the 3 primary characters. I gave it a sold 3hr listen... sadly couldn’t give up anymore time waiting for this book to develop.

TERRIBLE DRAWL-- COULDN'T KEEP A CONSISTENT PACE!

Do NOT listen to this narration. She draws way too many words out with a TERRIBLE southern drawl. Then there is a race to finish the... paragraph/page. READ IT YOURSELF, or don't bother. JUST TERRIBLE!
-- -- tried it since there wasn't very many reviews written-- -- now I know.
Story line? honestly-- not soo TERRIBLE! Very clean -- But could easily have passed on it.

Plus, what's up with this $24 crap-- then give it a sale price. IF YOU'RE VALUING SOMETHING AT A PRICE IT SHOULD BE COMPARABLE. This performance (and author) are NOWHERE near worthy. Not even a $1.99 rental. YES I PAID WAY TOO MUCH. DON'T WAIST THE CREDIT.
