Publisher's summary

Veronica Speedwell returns in another adventure filled with secrets and betrayal from Deanna Raybourn, the New York Times best-selling author of the Lady Julia Grey Mysteries.

Victorian adventuress Veronica Speedwell is whisked off to a remote island off the tip of Cornwall when her natural historian colleague Stoker's brother calls in a favor. On the pretext of wanting a companion to accompany him to Lord Malcolm Romilly's house party, Tiberius persuades Veronica to pose as his fiancée - much to Stoker's chagrin. But upon arriving, it becomes clear that the party is not as innocent as it had seemed. Every invited guest has a connection to Romilly's wife, Rosamund, who disappeared on her wedding day three years ago, and a dramatic dinner proves she is very much on her husband's mind.

As spectral figures, ghostly music, and mysterious threats begin to plague the partygoers, Veronica enlists Stoker's help to discover the host's true motivations. And as they investigate, it becomes clear that there are numerous mysteries surrounding the Romilly estate, and every person present has a motive to kill Rosamund....

Worst pick for a reade I have yet to hear

The performance is completed off for this series. I preordered this book and was looking forward to another fine listen. My disappointment was immediate. The performance in no way fit the characters Ms Raybourn has developed in her earlier installments.

Absolutely love these books

I’ll admit that Veronica annoyed me a little at first, because she was so bossy and a know it all, BUT, I’m glad I kept listening. She’s a wonderful, strong, imperfectly awesome character, and she and Stoker have become one of my favorite literary duos. Not to mention loving several other supporting character. The stories are imaginative, intriguing and fun, and Angele Masters does a wonderful job narrating them.

Another Gem!

This is by far my new favorite "Victorian Mystery" series!

I love everything about this series. Deanna Raybourn has created two absolutely intriguing characters,
and Angele Masters brings them to life with a masterful (no pun intended) performance!

I love mysteries set in the "Victorian" era and Miss Raybourn does an excellent job of looking at the Social mores
of the era, (especially as they pertained to women) through the eyes of a highly intelligent, thoroughly self assured,
and often frustrated "Modern" woman.

The constant bickering between Veronica and Stocker is always entertaining, and rings true as coming from two
people that have strong feelings for each other, but are afraid to admit it.

I would recommend starting with book one and listing to them in order. The back story introduced in the previous books
is, in my opinion, crucial to understanding the character development.

If you like the "Royal Spyness" series, you won't be disappointed.

An Excellent Adventure

As historical mysteries go, the fantastic adventures of Veronica Speedwell are among my favorites.

When Stoker's brother, The Vicount Templeton Vane invites Veronica to accompany him to an island off the Cornish coast, it is under the pretense of her acquiring the larvae of a rare butterfly. Stoker, suspicious of his brother's intentions, follows them to the castle of an old friend whose wife had disappeared just hours after their wedding. Soon the three of them are embroiled in solving the mystery of her disappearance while sorting out their own feelings and relationships.

Enhanced by the talented narration of Angele Masters, I recommend highly this book.

the perfect narrator and book pairing

Fabulous, from beginning to end. This is thoroughly enjoyable, and the narrator's voice is perfection for Miss Speedwell's character. I was absolutely sucked in to the story, which I cannot recommend enough. 💛💛💛💛💛 Five golden hearts!

Deanna Raybourn Has Done It Again!

Deanna Raybourn's 4th book in her Veronica Speedwell series was a pleasure from beginning to end. She loves to change up the settings and this time it was a castle on an island in Cornwall, which was really a character itself.
I have said it before and I will say it again: There are few authors who can write dialogue as well as Deanna Raybourn. The banter between Veronica and Stoker is so fun to listen to and read. In general, I missed them and was so happy when A Dangerous Collaboration was finally released!

I enjoyed the mystery and the characters, I was happy that Stoker's brother played a larger role in this book, as he pops in and out of the other books but he's a main player here.
I always get the audiobooks because the reader, Angele Masters is superb! Hands down my favorite reader. I have listened to books simply because she was the reader and have never been disapointed.

Get this book, you won't regret it! And if you haven't read/listened to any other of Deanna Raybourn's books, you really should!
