The 24 Hours in Charlottesville author offers a minute-by-minute account of the January 6 riots through never-before-heard stories of those who were there

Neus goes beyond mainstream reporting to reveal important truths about the US white nationalist movement

This bracing account reconstructs what it was actually like in and around the Capitol during those 24 hours.

  • Lawmakers recount donning gas masks and being evacuated to safe rooms.
  • Police officers recall insurrectionists screaming at them and calling them traitors.
  • Staffers remember “walking over pools of blood” as they ran for their lives.
  • A young Asian-American staffer recalls locking herself in a room just feet from the rioters, mentally preparing to be raped.
  • A mostly Black janitorial staff began cleaning the blood of insurrectionists off the marble floor on the Capitol before the building was even officially secured.

Neus’s sources include original interviews, court documents, firsthand accounts, the US Capitol Historical Society’s oral history project on the insurrection, and the work of Tim Heaphy, chief investigator of the congressional January 6 Select Committee.

January 6 was largely planned right out in the open, but lawmakers and government officials underestimated the threat in part because it was coming from white people. Neus examines the underlying racial implications of not only the attack itself, but also in the planning and coordination of the response.

i watched that day, as trump gave that speech. i told my son, listen to this. he's starting a riot! most of those people knew exactly what they were doing. they went there planning to kill people. he should never have been elected the first time, let alone the second. thank you for this book. history has an accurate account now.

Book has tons of data documenting the events on the ground at the US Capitol on 06Jan21. It works simply as one person telling their viewpoint story. The account lacks references, credible confirmation sources, and SOME DIFFERENT VOICES. Just because the narrator says, "Mark Smith, rioter: 'We're gonna hang that traitor, Mike Pence!'", then narrates the words of Mark Smith, rioters, in an even-toned female voice, does NOT give me the sense that I hear Mark Smith, rioters, in that narration. Complicated matters where you hear only the narrator lo voicing the words of a group, all randomly speaking or shouting.
It makes me think I stumbled on a documentary about an industrial laundry filmed by activating a (water-proofed) camera then dumping it in an operating washing machine. Sure, it might have some benefit, but we may not identify that benefit, in this lifetime or ever.
The quality of this record vs. for example, the House Jan 6th Hearing records,or all existing court records, or all video footage publicly available equates to adding little more than pocket lint to existing 06Jan21 info.

Excellent story. Terrible as a one-reader audiobook.
