  • Busting Myths On Reverse Mortgages And Gray Divorce
    Jul 22 2025

This episode of The D Shift highlights the importance of knowing your options, particularly when going through a gray divorce. Mardi Winder-Adams is joined by Laura Phillips, a respected and seasoned reverse mortgage specialist. Together, they explore the realities and misconceptions surrounding reverse mortgages. Laura brings more than three decades of experience in mortgage lending, and her passion for helping older adults navigate this little-understood financial option is evident throughout the conversation.

Laura traces the origins of reverse mortgages to the Reagan era, clarifying that these products are government-regulated loans intended for homeowners aged 62 and older. She dismantles some of the most stubborn myths, like the fear that the government will take away your home or that a you can be left unprotected. Instead, Laura explains, homeowners retain full title, and the loan simply functions as a means to convert home equity into usable cash, either through lump sums, monthly payments, or lines of credit, all without the obligation of a monthly mortgage payment.

They share a practical comparison between reverse mortgages and traditional HELOCs, highlighting how reverse mortgages can be especially useful for those with limited income in retirement, offering flexibility without demanding repayment until the homeowner sells or moves out of the property. Laura also notes recent legislative changes that further protect borrowers, ensuring better safety if both spouses reside in the home.

The discussion extends to considerations for anyone looking to age in place, including the ability to use reverse mortgage funds to modify homes for accessibility or to pay for in-home care. Laura urges listeners to approach these decisions thoughtfully, consult professionals, and always disclose their circumstances honestly, especially when dealing with properties that have rental units or additional occupants.

This episode is a great resource for individuals contemplating their financial future after divorce, widowhood, or simply as part of their retirement planning. Laura’s expertise makes the sometimes-intimidating topic of reverse mortgages feel much more manageable and relevant for anyone seeking clear information on the subject.

  • Support Systems Make Divorce Easier
    Jul 15 2025

In this episode, Mardi Winder-Adams has an uplifting conversation with Stephanie McPhail, who is not only a certified crisis counselor but also someone who has been through the highs and lows of divorce. Stephanie shares how, despite looking like she had it all together as an accomplished teacher and professional, she was struggling behind closed doors in a difficult and even abusive marriage. Her story will resonate with anyone who's ever felt isolated, embarrassed, or stuck in the idea that they must keep up appearances while holding things together.

Stephanie talks about how easy it is to get trapped in comparison, whether it's looking at others in equally unhealthy relationships or scrolling through social media and seeing everyone's happy posts while you're feeling lost or overwhelmed. She discusses the pressure, especially on high-achievers, to pretend everything is fine, even when it's not, simply because opening up can feel risky or shameful. Mardi adds from her experience as a divorce coach and advocate, reinforcing how common these feelings are, and they both agree that the secrecy and pressure to handle everything alone can make things so much harder than they need to be.

They also break down some of the traps people fall into during and after divorce, like waiting until things are legally finalized before reaching out for support, or expecting your lawyer to guide you through emotional healing, when you may need someone who understands the whole picture. Stephanie introduces the Divorce Support Network, a practical resource she co-founded that matches people with specifically vetted professionals, from financial advisors and therapists to real estate agents and mechanics. The goal is to make sure nobody has to fumble through the process alone, so you can spend less time worrying about where to turn and more time focusing on your own well-being and future.

Throughout the conversation, there's a reassuring message: however you're feeling right now, you're not alone, and it is possible to create a new, fulfilling chapter after divorce. With the right kind of help and community, the process doesn't have to be isolating or overwhelming.

    About the Guest:

Stephanie McPhail is a Love and Life Success Coach and Co-Founder of the largest Divorce Support Network in the United States. She is a certified Crisis Counselor and Coach with a Double Masters Degree in Health and Education and a Bachelors in Psychology. • From Rock Bottom To A Beautiful Life: The Importance Of Forgiveness
    Jul 1 2025

On this episode, I sit down for an inspiring conversation with Ken Miller, whose story is both moving and full of hope. Ken is an author, speaker, and resilience coach who has faced just about every challenge life can throw at a person. Growing up in foster care and later experiencing a turbulent family life, Ken went from being a promising Ivy League student to living on the streets and spending years behind bars. His journey through addiction and life on the streets is not something he hides. Instead, Ken shares it openly because he believes owning your story is the first step in moving forward.

Throughout the episode, Ken talks about how he found his way out of that dark place by getting real with himself. He shares that telling yourself the truth is essential, even when it's painful. Ken also shares how big a role forgiveness played in his healing process. Ken makes it clear that forgiveness isn't just for the people who have hurt you, but also for yourself. We reflect on the idea that everyone's journey is different, and that there's no set timetable for feeling better after hitting rock bottom. Ken reveals that for him, becoming whole again took years, but it started with a little step, including getting outside his pain, finding supportive people to talk to, and learning to quiet the negative self-talk.

We also highlight how important it is not to compare your pain or struggles to someone else's. No matter what you've gone through, your feelings are real and valid. Ken's message is simple: you have value and are worthy of a better future. Even if you're carrying a lot of pain or regret, you can begin again, and sometimes helping others or reaching out for support is what helps you most. Ken's book, Becoming Ken, weaves these lessons together, offering hope that, with honesty, a willingness to face the truth, and the courage to keep going, it is possible to transform your life one step at a time.

    About the Guest:

Ken Miller is a powerful speaker, author, and resilience coach who helps people overcome adversity by embracing truth, courage, and self-worth. After battling addiction and hitting rock bottom, Ken rebuilt his life with honesty and purpose—and now shares that hard-won wisdom to inspire others. With a background in nonprofit leadership and a deep commitment to recovery and transformation, Ken speaks from experience, not theory.

His story is raw, real, and deeply human, resonating with audiences who are ready to face their own struggles and rise stronger. On stage and behind the mic, Ken delivers more than inspiration—he offers practical tools, mindset shifts, and a path to lasting change. Whether speaking about addiction, authenticity, or the power of resilience, Ken connects with listeners profoundly, reminding them that no matter how far they've fallen, there's always a way forward—starting with the truth.

  • Debunking Money Myths That Hold Women Back
    Jun 24 2025

In this episode, I sit down with Ed Vargo, founder and CEO of Burning River Advisory Group, to discuss the crucial topic of financial confidence, especially as it relates to women before, during, and after divorce. Ed shares insights from over 20 years in the financial services industry, explaining how he and his business partner Melana Carbary became invested in supporting predominantly women-led households. Their focus sharpened when they repeatedly saw women emerge from divorce with suboptimal settlements, despite having excellent legal advice, due to misunderstandings or a lack of financial guidance.

Ed emphasizes the unique challenges women face regarding money, including persistent myths such as “I can’t learn money” or “my partner is better at handling finances.” He discusses the risks of these mindsets and highlights the importance of taking an active role in financial decisions, not only for divorce but throughout life. The conversation touches on the emotional baggage many carry about money, shaped by childhood experiences and societal messages, and how these beliefs can directly impact financial well-being and confidence.

We reflect on the necessity of financial literacy as a life skill, particularly noting the limitations of traditional divisions of labor in households. Ed also introduces EnlightenHer, a new educational venture aimed at making expert financial advice and resources more accessible to women at all stages. This thoughtful conversation offers practical perspectives and encouragement for anyone looking to take charge of their financial future, whether navigating a divorce or simply seeking more confidence with money.

  • Release Anxiety With EFT Tapping
    Jun 17 2025

Today I am joined by Kristen Curtis, a certified EFT practitioner, Akashic records reader, and spiritual coach who specializes in supporting women navigating divorce and significant life transitions. Kristen shares her approach, which centers on empowering women to reconnect with their intuition and inner strength by drawing on both emotional and spiritual practices. She begins by talking about her own journey and how practices like Emotional Freedom Techniques (more commonly known as tapping) helped her realize the importance of looking within for healing and clarity.

Throughout our conversation, Kristen explains how EFT works by using gentle tapping on specific points of the body to help restore energetic balance, regulate the nervous system, and address emotional challenges such as anxiety, self-blame, and fear. She highlights how EFT can be especially useful for those uncomfortable with traditional talk therapy, as the focus shifts from reliving difficult memories to addressing bodily sensations and fostering self-acceptance in the present moment.

The episode explores common feelings of failure and self-blame that surface during divorce, and Kristen describes how she helps clients cultivate compassion for themselves, even as they process complex emotions. She also touches on the significance of learning to trust oneself and the universe during times of uncertainty, and the importance of allowing space for integration and healing after major life changes.
