In 1908, near Folsom, New Mexico, a cowboy discovered the remains of a herd of extinct giant bison. By examining flint points embedded in the bones, archeologists later determined that a band of humans had killed and butchered the animals 12,450 years ago. This discovery vastly expanded America's known human history but also revealed the long-standing danger Homo sapiens presented to the continent's evolutionary richness.

Distinguished scholar Dan Flores's ambitious history chronicles the epoch in which humans and animals have coexisted in the "wild new world" of North America—a place shaped both by its own grand evolutionary forces and by momentous arrivals from Asia, Africa, and Europe. With portraits of iconic creatures such as mammoths, horses, wolves, and bison, Flores describes the evolution and historical ecology of North America like never before.

In thrilling narrative style, informed by genomic science, evolutionary biology, and environmental history, Flores celebrates the astonishing bestiary that arose on our continent and introduces the complex human cultures and individuals who hastened its eradication, studied America's animals, and moved heaven and earth to rescue them. Eons in scope and continental in scale, Wild New World is a sweeping yet intimate Big History of the animal-human story in America.

I'm a huge fan of Dan flores's books, but the reader on this one was absolutely insufferable for me. he sounds like a cross between an old-timey newspaper salesman and somebody trying to get 3rd graders excited about content that is above their level. the content of this book is incredible and I really wish that Dan would read his books himself because after listening to him on podcasts I think that he would be best for it. however maybe he just doesn't want to. in this case though the person reading the book ruined it for me, so I returned it and bought a hard copy

Amazing book, but the narrator..............

Flores does a great job tackling a huge project. This book will change your perspective on North American fauna and man’s relationship with the natural world. I highly recommend it. Unfortunately, the narrator wasn’t just bad, his style insulted and detracted from Flores’ work. The narration is more for children’s books, not scientific nonfiction. If you have time, read the book. Otherwise you will have to suffer through the worst reading possible.

Amazing Book. Awful Narrator.

This narrator brutalized an otherwise entertaining and informational book. What a mess. I would buy this book again for twice the current price if it were narrated by Flores himself.

Why do authors let actors narrate their books?

This story is incredible but I cannot listen to this recording without falling asleep! Get the writer Dan Flores to read the book please. I’ve never listened to something so emotionless and boring. ✌️

Get a new Narrator!

The guy reading this book sounds so disconnected from the literature. Why wouldn’t you have Dan Flores read his own work?

Who is this guy reading?

I did not like the narration at all. It reminded me of a non professional reading a book on tape years ago.

Excellent story poor narration.

I felt the need to slow the narration as it was too fast. At -9.5, it was better.

Fascinating story

This book started out true to its title, but the last chapters drifted in politics, religion, climate, and personal opinions. First let me start by saying climate change is real, but some of his ideas are clearly off target from the facts. His ideas concerning the “little ice age” are unfounded. He starts to drive a certain point of view… He does the same by using a broad brush when talking about conservatives, Christians, and anyone who doesn’t follow his climate change way of thinking. Rather than just convey the facts about animal extinctions, and efforts to correct past transgressions, he starts pointing fingers. In some cases, unjustifiably so. His bottom line appears to be animals - good / man - bad.

Started out great, but it drifted at the end

This latest by Dan Flores started off as a wonderful work. Information on the Chicxulub event that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs, and the rise of mammals through the megafauna of the Pleistocene was incredible writing. Flores detailing on Clovis and Folsom paleo cultures was equally great. I enjoyed the first part of the book.

The low overall rating comes from Mr. Flores pointing out the flaws of 19th century and earlier society regarding stewardship of animal life. Writing on historical topics calls for objectivity. It's easy to say what they did wrong; nothing like a Monday morning quarterback. Does Mr. Flores really think that he needed to inform the reader that the wholesale slaughter of the Bison was a supremely bad idea? Maybe he has to include a woke homage for academia to give his a gold star.

The narrator had a terrible voice.

Disappointing

Great audiobook, wish the author would have narrated.
I recommend this to any folks that think humans are the best.
I only gave 3 stars for performance because I think the author could have done a better job
Great listen, definitely recommend to any homo sapien
