Acerca de esta escucha
Wide Is the Gate, written in 1943, is the fourth of the epic eleven-part classic Lanny Budd series written by Upton Sinclair.
Wide Is the Gate followed the 1943 Pulitzer Prize-winning Dragon’s Teeth and introduces Lanny as a secret double agent fighting the Nazis as a supporter of the resistance in Germany. Lanny is living in England with his wife of almost five years, Irma Barnes, the twenty-three-million-dollar heiress. But Lanny is conflicted continuously in his heart and soul for the workers and social justice. He attempts to commit to Irma, to “behave” himself and lead a normal aristocratic life. But foremost he is committed to ending Nazism, Fascism, and the overthrow of the democratically elected Spanish government.
Lanny is awakened at the end of Dragon’s Teeth to the oncoming dangers of the Nazis, and involves himself in a double agent role by helping a new friend, Monck. Monck is a German socialist who is part of the underground and works with the resistance to alert people to the terrors of the Nazis.
Many adventures and dangers present themselves as Lanny travels back into Germany as an art expert, eventually dealing directly with Hermann Göring. He uses the proceeds of the confiscated artwork stolen by Göring to help finance the resistance from inside the heart of Naziland.

Historia
Boston is the novelized account of the Sacco and Vanzetti affair, which rocked the nation—and the world—in the 1920s. Two working-class Italian immigrants, both associated with radical political beliefs, stood accused of the murder of two armed guards during the commission of a payroll robbery. Sinclair’s novel weaves actual historical facts, stories, and persons with persons and events he created for the purpose of telling an interesting story, with more and deeper historical context.

Historia
As he did so masterfully in The Jungle, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Upton Sinclair interweaves social criticism with human tragedy to create an unforgettable portrait of Southern California's early oil industry. Enraged by the oil scandals of the Harding administration in the 1920s, Sinclair tells a gripping tale of avarice, corruption, and class warfare, featuring a cavalcade of characters, including senators, oil magnates, Hollywood film starlets, and a crusading evangelist.

Historia
Wall Street is corrupt and has been corrupt for generations. There are to be found the Great Men shuffling millions (and now billions) from one bank, one trust, one syndicate, and one scheme to the next. Wealth brings power and with the power comes more wealth. Upton Sinclair tells us this tale through the eyes of a Wall Street lawyer in 1906. A man who is "in Society" but not truly "of Society". A man named Montague begins to bit by bit to see the true rape and pillage of the economy which is going on day by day.

Historia
From the author of the landmark book of investigative “muckraking” journalism, The Jungle comes only the second book by Sinclair to be produced as an audiobook for commercial distribution: The Brass Check. Upton Sinclair turns his critical eye and his sharp pen on the corruption and lies of the media that ruled the day 100 years ago - the newspapers, the magazines, and the wire services. He lays bare their pervasive collusion with big industrial, financial, and political interests.

Few books have so affected radical social changes as The Jungle, first published serially in 1906. Exposing unsanitary conditions in the meat-packing industry in Chicago, Sinclair's novel gripped Americans by the stomach, contributing to the passage of the first Food and Drug Act. If you’ve never read this classic novel, don't be put off by its gruesome reputation. Upton Sinclair was a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist who could turn even an exposé into a tender and moving novel.

Skilled Royal Air Force bomber pilot Sam Lambert is exhausted, and his veteran crewmen have just been replaced by an inexperienced new team. Victor von Löwenherz, a German night fighter pilot who intercepts RAF bombers in his Junkers Ju 88, looks on with horror at the Nazi regime. And Hansl, a German boy in the small market town of Altgarten, sleeps at home. Lambert and his crew prepare for a bombing raid on the Ruhr area. It’s a night that many will never forget. Bomber is a masterful, gripping minute-by-minute account of what occurs over the next twenty-four hours.

Historia
Here is an extraordinary portrait of one of the most complicated - and misunderstood - figures among the Founding Fathers. In 1804, while serving as vice president, Aaron Burr fought a duel with his political nemesis, Alexander Hamilton, and killed him. In 1807, he was arrested, tried, and acquitted of treason. In 1833, Burr is newly married, an aging statesman considered a monster by many. But he is determined to tell his own story, and he chooses to confide in a young New York City journalist. Burr is the first novel in Gore Vidal's Narratives of Empire series.

Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

When Singer sewing machine tycoon Edward Clark built a luxury apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in the late 1800s, it was derisively dubbed “the Dakota” for being as far from the center of the downtown action as its namesake territory on the nation’s western frontier. Despite its remote location, the quirky German Renaissance-style castle, with its intricate façade, peculiar interior design, and gargoyle guardians peering down on Central Park, was an immediate hit, particularly among the city’s well-heeled intellectuals and artists.

Sinclair McKay's portrait of Berlin from 1919 forward explores the city's broad human history, from the end of the Great War to the Blockade, rise of the Wall, and beyond. Sinclair McKay's Berlin begins by taking listeners back to 1919, when the city emerged from the shadows of the Great War to become an extraordinary by-word for modernity—in art, cinema, architecture, industry, science, and politics. He traces the city’s history through the rise of Hitler and the Battle for Berlin, which ended in the final conquest of the city in 1945.

Fantastic series with the perfect narrator!
Love the series - not unlike War and Peace, it’s an investment whose payoff far exceeds the required attention. Have sped through the first four novels in just a couple of months.
The novels are themselves history lessons - detailing events both famous and lesser known. In a Forrest Gump manner, Lanny Budd finds himself a participant/eyewitness to the 20th century’s most crucial events (but with a narrator who possesses all the necessary awareness and ability to describe the moments)! And Bronson Pinchot continues to prove that he’s one of the very best audiobook readers Audible has to offer. In no small part thanks to his narration, I’m sure to complete this massive series.

Lanny Budd Strikes Again!
Upton Sinclair's Lanny Budd series gets back in the fact lane with Wide is the Gate. The urgency returns in Book 4 of the series and Bronson Pinchot continues his excellent reading of Sinclair's work. With each book in the Lanny Budd series, Sinclair seems more & more prescient with his observations (is he writing about the 1930s or sometime much more recent?). I look forward to continuing the series!

Fat Phobia
I’m a great admirer of Upton Sinclair’s social conscience, so I’m saddened by the frequent emphasis put on the word ‘ fat’ as almost synonymous with ‘disgusting and hateful’. Sinclair’s constant repetition of the description doesn’t need to be amplified by the narrator’s emphasis on the word.

Long awaited audiobook
I’ve always loved the Lanny Budd series. For awhile, the hard copies of the books were rare to find and I thought I’d never be able to listen to the books. They are a lengthy read and once you read them it is a task to reread them. However the audiobooks have made the characters and the much loved literary style of the books come alive again. I’m so happy the series is on audible!
