The year 1942 marked the turning point of World War II.

The Americans destroyed the Japanese Battle Fleet in the decisive engagements of Midway and the Coral Sea. General Montgomery defeated General Rommel at El Alamein. But for President Roosevelt, 1942 was the darkest hour of the war. He knew the Germans were developing the atomic bomb. Our victories would be meaningless if the Nazis perfected the “A” bomb first. There was only one man who could find out the biggest Nazi secret of the war: Lanny Budd.

This is the eighth novel in Upton Sinclair’s monumental Lanny Budd series of eleven. Listening to the entire series is indispensable to a true understanding of the forces that have shaped our tragic century.

I tried to finish reading this book before Bronson Pinchot's narration came out. I've also done this with every Lanny Budd book. I have never succeeded, maybe getting a little over halfway sometimes.

For me to read this book, I have to have a phone always present, for there are going to be extra-linguistic phrases to look up (eg. in One Clear Call's second part of chp 1, 'I Povere Gente' is Italian for The Poor People), there are going to be references made (eg. one's skin being the shade of a pecan tree) and antiquated phraseology along with the antiquated people who say them to look up. Reading the Lanny Budd books is an undertaking, but yields pleasure I get from nowhere else in my life, solving a puzzle laid out by a genius author almost 80 years ago.

I am privileged to work in manufacturing, and being able to wear headphones, I'd finished the audiobook in three days. In all honesty, I had thought the Pulitzer prize awarded to Dragon's Teeth was damning of the next books in the series, but truly I say they are only getting better.

Bronson Pinchot matches Upton Sinclair's linguistic genius, finding charisma in his words I never could, invoking the sober-minded author's storytelling in so many ways. To list the most poignant ways, his accents are flawless, from FDR to Swiss nationals brought up in Brooklyn. His tone is always deliberate, quiet when clandestine, cheerful-to-grave when FDR, roaring when Adi. His pronunciation of foreign words correct the mistakes I have made when reading, it's so good!

I was laughing out loud when Bronson narrated a joke regarding Hitler and Goring looking for teacups, on the edge of my seat during the bombing of Berlin, and on holiday when the Budd family enjoys Christmas. Thank you, Bronson Pinchot, and all producers involved, in making this work possible. You have enriched my perception and broadened the potential for joy in my life.
