Gillie Trewlove knows what a stranger’s kindness can mean, having been abandoned on a doorstep as a baby and raised by the woman who found her there. So, when suddenly faced with a soul in need at her door—or the alleyway by her tavern—Gillie doesn’t hesitate. But he’s no infant. He’s a grievously injured, distractingly handsome gentleman who doesn’t belong in Whitechapel, much less recuperating in Gillie’s bed . . .
Being left at the altar is humiliating; being rescued from thugs by a woman—albeit a brave and beautiful one—is the pièce de résistance to the Duke of Thornley’s extraordinarily bad day. After nursing him back from the brink, Gillie agrees to help him comb London’s darker corners for his wayward bride. But every moment together is edged with desire and has Thorne rethinking his choice of wife. Yet Gillie knows the aristocracy would never accept a duchess born in sin. Thorne, however, is determined to prove to her that no obstacle is insurmountable when a duke loves a woman.

This book is a bit too long so I will cut to the chase. Thorne begins to see the world differently through Gilly’s eyes, her commitment to assisting others regardless of their preconceived worth by society and her innate kindness and generosity. Throne’s growth does not occur only by observing but by Gilly fearlessly speaking her mind. Her beliefs provide a relevant message then and now - that all people are diverse, have value, and deserve respect and kindness.
Thorne would like to pursue a romantic relationship with Gilly but is stymied by his conflict between duty and desire. Gilly accepts that their relationship will end eventually.
Gilly’s family is composed of orphans taken in and raised by a kind and loving woman. The storyline demonstrates that every member of a family is important to the success of the individuals in the family,as well as the family as a whole.
The plot and storyline are interesting albeit too long and I have left much for the reader/listener to discover. I recommend this book to readers/listeners who enjoy lengthy stories with likable unique characters, action that is unpredictable but relevant to storyline, secondary characters that surprise you, and primary plot twists tied up - no important loose ends left hanging. That is not to say that more resolution in regard to the runaway fiancé wouldn’t have been welcome but that is just a thought.
I do not recommend this book to those who prefer a tight quick paced storyline with much amorous activity as they would be disappointed with “When a Duke Loves A Woman.”
I enjoyed the narrator’s rendition.
