Long-listed, Barnes and Noble Best New Books of the Year, 2024

"Narrator Avi Roque delivers a perfectly paced performance....seamlessly switching between English, Scottish, and American accents to distinguish the variety of characters."—AudioFile on What Moves the Dead, an Earphones Award winner

The follow-up to T. Kingfisher’s bestselling gothic novella, What Moves the Dead.

Retired soldier, Alex Easton, returns in a horrifying new adventure.

After their terrifying ordeal at the Usher manor, Alex Easton feels as if they just survived another war. All they crave is rest, routine, and sunshine, but instead, as a favor to Angus and Miss Potter, they find themself heading to their family hunting lodge, deep in the cold, damp forests of their home country, Gallacia.

In theory, one can find relaxation in even the coldest and dampest of Gallacian autumns, but when Easton arrives, they find the caretaker dead, the lodge in disarray, and the grounds troubled by a strange, uncanny silence. The villagers whisper that a breath-stealing monster from folklore has taken up residence in Easton’s home. Easton knows better than to put too much stock in local superstitions, but they can tell that something is not quite right in their home. . . or in their dreams.

What Feasts at Night (Sworn Soldier, #2)
by T. Kingfisher
the audible performance was great. I loved the expression of the reader.
Another dark look at the mysterious world of legends and haunting history. The book shows how our perception of darkness is influenced by our culture. Easton and Angus have returned to Galicia in an attempt to provide Mrs Potter access to mushrooms. They find a mystery in the old hunting lodge that is more dangerous than two old soldiers were prepared for.
I really like the characters and the mystery they set up.

haunting

Predictable but a good listen while working. I’ll be suggesting it to a few people

It’s okay

I genuinely like this series, from a retired soldier with PTSD and they/them pronouns to a well meaning British lady with a stiff upper lip and, of course, the grumpy Scot, the characters make this book enjoyable. What this book lacks when compared to its predecessor is pacing. Halfway through the book it seems to lose its plot and you feel stuck in exposition. The climax arrives much like emptying a bottle of ketchup- slowly, and then all at once. I didn’t realize I was nearing the end of the book until it was over and I felt somewhat letdown. What Moves at Night’s exposition and pacing was better than this novel, and if there are any subsequent sequels, I hope the pacing improves. As always, this narrator leaves something to be desired but the story is interesting enough that I was able to look past it. Four stars

Slowly then all at once

T. Kingfisher’s stuff that I’ve read (this, what moves the dead, and a house with good bones) have been quick easy listens that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. They are creepy and funny and clever.

Love the narrator. Love the style. Fast and fun listen.

While this book is short, the story is amazing. Unfortunately, yet again, the narrator makes it absolutely unlistenable. Their pronunciation and over articulation is like Frances McDormand, Dora the Explorer, and Miss Rachel combined. I'm only an hour and a half in and I can't force myself to power through this one and normally I devour books like this. It's a shame about the narrator. Hopefully I'll grab a physical copy of the book and read it eventually.

Story is great, narrator is AWFUL

I really enjoyed this book, it is a good sequel. It lives up to the first book.

Really good book

A worthy follow up to What Moves the Dead. While I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first, I still thought it was worth reading. The characters were lovable and reasonable, which makes them fun to follow. I also enjoyed the culture created within the book. Elements of the horror from the first book were present here, but this is definitely its own story. I am hoping for a third book in this series!

A worthy successor

good gothic vibes, pretty well written, a little bare (needed a bit more meat on it's bones) and a not very satisfying conclusion.

pretty good spooky story

Worried it wasn’t going to be as exciting as the first book but did not disappoint. I love that this story focused on a folk monster you don’t hear much about. The author is very good at using small details to give you that creeped out feeling.
Highly recommend this series to those who enjoy horror and some historical fiction.

Lovely and Creepy
