Good Book for Patients and Therapists

Did a great job giving patient examples and real life situations that have worked for others in the past. Would have liked the audio version to provide separate voices when doing patient and therapist depictions.

Earth-shattering Theory and Therapy

Sorry for they extreme headline, yet it is nevertheless true. Dr Ross treats "schizophrenia" as DID, "voices" as dissociated personalities, voices to be spoken with and negotiated with, instead of drugged into brain-damage. Have you ever heard any news report, school textbook or medical book describe this technique? Of course not, they are usually financed by the pharmaceutical industry that demands $3,500 per single monthly injection of antipsychotic, that rarely makes voices go away but often causes permanent extrapyramidal seizures, that insurance companies refuse to pay for so drs refuse to diagnose or treat. Dr Ross also describes how "PTSD" is successfully treated as DID in 90% of cases. This book, and presumably Dr Ross' other books that delve into more detail on this illness, like Satanic ritual abuse and military mindcontrol, offer hope to the hopeless and their exhausted loved ones. I purchased both the book and the audiobook, pleased with both, since by necessity I require a practical working knowlege to deal living with a friend who is currently locked in solitary confinement in prison, due to another near-fatal DID event from a long series of events, due to the most extreme child trauma. 49 of 50 drs have refused to help her, they just use her as an ATM, jails and prison torture her for profit. The 1 ER dr who did help her only gave her a forced Haldol injection that wore off in a couple days, yet caused extrapyramidal side effect. I have met several women diagnosed "schizophrenic" and/or DID, all "abused" by pedophiles, I dare say this is epidemic. Statistics are shocking how many women, and men, were "abused" sexually as children. Perhaps this book should be required reading for the nation?

A must listen if you are a serious therapist.

This book was precise with relevant explanation on each point made. I would recommend it to all medical and mental health practitioners. I rated it four (4) stars all around because it couldn’t have been any better, period. Thank you Dr. Ross and Mr. Pilot.

As a therapist I found this helpful

Short, sweet and to the point. I found this book helpful as an intro to DID work.

Very insightful!

I've lived with OSDD my whole life, and while I have some reservations about the material, I think this is probably on of the better approaches I've heard. To any therapist/relative/etc, if you re not already well versed with DID I would suggest adopting this information till you get a handle on things.

Great brief info for those starting out!

I’ve been diagnosed as having OSDD following a scid-d assessment several years ago. I’ve since been diagnosed with DID under a new trauma therapist. I try to educate myself as much as I can since I work with therapists who are competent, but not necessarily experts on these conditions. Though I am not at the beginning of my journey, I still found this beneficial. If I could go back in time I would begin here and then probably move into Janina Fisher’s work. I’ve read a few papers by the other of this book which later led to my interest in spending a audible credit for it. I love love love that it was short and sweet. I hope that bc of this it can appeal to many. Dr. Colin Ross is solid in his expert experience, and I appreciate his normalizing approach.

Good Beginner Treatment Reference

One of the best beginner guides to treating DID out there. Would love to see a sequel at a deeper level; detailing more about integration, the processing of memories via EMDR, and building tolerance of knowledge between alters. Performance was good, but would have been better in my option to have dual readers for the many client-therapist dialogues in this book. I very much appreciate Ross’s neutral (but supportive) approach as the underlying tone of treatment of the disorder.

Highly Effective & Practical Advice

This book was really helpful. I loved that it wasn't filled with unnecessary fluff, but got right to point and gave practical advice with lots of examples. It has helped me in my professional life greatly (I am a mental health clinician and specialize in trauma). The author seems well informed, very experienced, and has a deep compassion for people who struggle with fragmented selves. I learned tips to help me treat people with DID and basically, anyone with PTSD who struggles with some level of fragmentation of themselves.

Fascinating and Well Written

I'm just a high school graduate so I have no credentials to properly evaluate this book, but I absolutely loved listening to it!
