Resumen del Editor

Audiobook three of the Cadian series

The second book of the Minka Lesk story arc follows on from the story started in Cadian Honour.

Listen to it because

The Cadian 101st, led by Minka Lesk, is taking the fight to the traitors on Malouri. Will their faith and pride keep them fighting or will the meat-grinder siege break them down?

Description

Cadia, 10,000 years a stalwart bastion against Chaos, is broken. Its collapse at the hands of Abaddon and the Thirteenth Black Crusade has fractured the Imperium of Man, and in its wake spreads the seeds of heresy, lies and insurrection. It falls to Cadia’s survivors to fight on, bloodied but unyielding, in the name of the Emperor.

On the world of Malouri, traitorous forces have retreated to the impregnable island fortress of Crannog Mons. After years of stalemate warfare, the task of breaking the siege is given to Minka Lesk and the Cadian 101st, who find themselves fighting a meat-grinder mission that threatens to devour them. In the midst of slaughter, sacrifice and brutal attrition, a question must be answered: what does it mean to be Cadian in a galaxy without Cadia?

Written by Justin D Hill. Audiobook narrated by Colleen Prandergast.

An absolute blast to listen to!!!

I had my doubts about this book. Although I was a fan of the previous novel, “Cadian Honour”, I felt that Minka Lesk was no more than a side character in the overall story, but this book…. Oh boy. We finally get a proper story focusing mainly on Minka and it was a nonstop action thriller through and through. I can’t wait for the next one no🧢

A series that goes from strength to strength

I’m thoroughly enjoying how this book series has found it’s corner in the Era Indomitus books, individual stories of the Cadians as they find themselves after the Fall of Cadia, exploring an uncaring galaxy where they find themselves going from a lynchpin force to a humiliated and decimated army looking to retain their identity.

Like Hill’s previous Cadian novels, this has an extensive cast, offering different perspectives. ‘Realism’ is a rather nebulous concept when it comes to 40k books, but this has the definite plausibility that the best titles have. The action scenes are great, and the dynamics between the characters are really well presented. It’s also refreshing to see an internecine conflict in the wake of the great rift

I cannot wait for another book in this series, it’s rapidly becoming my favourite.

Amazing

Wasn’t a huge Cadia fan until this book. I read the first 2 books and they didn’t resonate with me the same way this one did.

I like to work listening to his books, the story is good and solid. Straight forward, the good guys are great the bad guys lose. :)

Better than book 2

Enjoyable listen. Book 1 is probably still the best in the series, but this is an improvement on the second act. Only quibble I have is the repeated "Cadians are the best of the best of the best" bits. It was never necessary, but certainly not by book 3.

Author does good job creating a narrative reason for Cadians to keep existing in the tabletop game going forward.

And lastly Colleen Pendergast does a fantastic job. Her character voices are well done and unique for each person, and her male voices are not distractingly female.

Some good some not so good

Minka Lesk is finally an interesting character in the third book of a series which she is ostensibly the lead.
There’s a lot going on in this story, a lot of which is unfortunately not really story but instead just characters talking about planning military strategy even though there really isn’t one (Gen. Bendikt’s great scheme is to just throw everything all at once at the traitors basically). A lot of characters show up from the previous book although they don’t really contribute anything to moving the plot forward or have character arcs.
You could pretty much take out anything that isn’t Minka’s story and you’d probably have a better, more tightly written novel.
The main villain appears once at the beginning g of the story and then again at the very end where he is basically like “oh the book is over? Guess I’ll die then!”
Aside from the Astra Militarum and the Mechanicus, you won’t see any of the other Warhammer factions. Even the traitor guard are traitors for purely political reasons (and have a sympathetic position on the outset at that). Oh and there are some sisters of battle who immediately die, but we’re just told about it.
Jeez, maybe I didn’t like this book. I actually did enjoy Minka Leak’s story this time around and wished it had focused solely on her and her squad. There are some really awesome moments in the story, like when all the soldier’s start singing The Flowers of Cadia. That might very well bring a tear to your eye.
So the good parts are really good but they’re broken up by boring parts and grand set pieces that slow the plot.
Colleen Prandergast is a great narrator and I was pleased to hear her reprise her role here.
All in all, not the best, definitely flawed, but still good.
