"I’d never done anything crazy like this before–a pilgrimage walk. I was not a hiker, and I wasn’t a Catholic. In fact, I wasn’t even sure I was a Christian. On the last government census when I had to state my religion, I'd said I was a Buddhist, mainly because they’ve had such a hard time in Tibet I felt they needed my statistical support.

I was also not an adventure traveller. For me, adventure travel was flying coach. All this backpacking and wearing of heavy boots and flying off to France to walk ancient pilgrimage routes was a new experience, and not one that made me feel entirely comfortable."

And so Bill Bennett, an Australian based film director, set off on an 800 kilometre walk across Spain to Santiago de Compostela, not sure why he was doing it, and not feeling entirely comfortable. His discomfort increased markedly a few days later when his knee gave out–so the rest of the walk was a “pain management pilgrimage.”

But he kept his sense of humor, and his memoir is at times hilarious, but also deeply moving and insightful. In the vein of Bill Bryson and Eric Newby, The Way, My Way takes you on a unique spiritual journey, and gives you a hearty laugh along the way.

Greatly enjoy the humor

Greatly enjoyed the memoir as I was on the Camino that same year. Love the humor, the emotions, the high and lows.

My biggest criticism is that the very talented narrator was a woman. It was jarring every time I would start the narrative and heard the voice of a young, mid-Atlantic, feminine voice rather than the voice of an older, Australian man.

A wonderful way to show the lessons learned, literally

This was a great read about the Camino and the lessons one realizes he/she learns while on Pilgrimage.

My Favorite Camino Memoir

My husband and I are preparing to walk the Camino in a couple of months and we’ve been reading and listening to a lot of people’s experiences. Bill’s story is my favorite! It is witty, self-aware, but not overly emotional. The people he encounters are lively and you truly experience the things he experiences along the way. At first I thought it might be odd to have a memoir written by a man he read by a woman but it’s a perfect choice.

Light and deep

I liked the sense of humor mixed with the insights of the author. I disliked the chosing of a female narrator for the book. It did not match.

My Way Too

Listening to the unfolding of a man’s journey brought me back to my own journey. I walked the same 500 miles in 2012. It is now 2024 and some of my feelings returned to remind me…why did I do it?

The laughter

Liked the honesty on the walk and that the personnel guidance system guided him back to love.

Nice story

Great insight into the Camino. I enjoyed being on the journey with him. Can’t wait for my own adventure
