Joseph Balderrama
Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans—though no one calls them that anymore.
His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the “Transition.” Now, eating human meat—“special meat”—is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing.
Then one day he’s given a gift: a live specimen of the finest quality. Though he’s aware that any form of personal contact is forbidden on pain of death, little by little he starts to treat her like a human being. And soon, he becomes tortured by what has been lost—and what might still be saved.

This list encompasses the full spectrum of what horror can be—campfire-worthy tales, stomach-churning gore, and incisive social commentary. The classics are accounted for, but it also spotlights more recent titles, because that’s the nature of the genre—it is as perennial as it is ever-evolving, conjuring whatever frights most haunt our collective consciousness. Each title does have one thing in common: It makes for devilishly good listening. So cut the lights and press play—if you dare.

What a terrifying reality to be in

The performance is fantastic. Balderrama puts plenty of character in that you would otherwise not get from the physical book experience. Genuinely laughing when a character is making a joke, actually chewing and smacking his lips when a character is eating (which also adds to the overall horror and disgust of the characters’ culinary preferences) and pausing to compose himself when the character is emotional.
That being said, I wish the story elaborated more on why society was able to so quickly grow accustomed to eating humans. That is such a drastic thing to introduce to people and I was surprised that it was portrayed as such an easy and smooth transition. But I am able to suspend my disbelief for the sake of the rest of the book.
MILD SPOILERS
I was shocked by the ending and initially thought it was a completely out-of-character moment, but after some thinking I believe that this was the author commentating on how often a person can condemn something until it benefits them to join in on it.
I believe Jasmine’s role in the story could be viewed as a metaphor for how women and/or disabled people are viewed by society and the people who socially outrank them, more specifically men.
