This performance heard three times

This performance has been heard three times by me. The narrator's accent bothered and distracted me the first time, but by the end I had sort of become accustomed to it, so I decided to listen again to see if I could actually understand the tale. The second time around, it was lot more pleasant, and I could follow the tale. All things considered, the theatrical reading was actually quite good and helped to remind me that accents occur in a wide variety, and the aspects of the intonations and subtleties that I found so bothersome were probably true to the narrative.

I really love

I really love how typical of an Amanda Quick book this is. Her strong female characters and the conflict and chemistry they have with her male heroes are appealing to me. But AQ was the author who lured me back into this genre a few years ago. I had previously shunned historical romance for 35 years due to the widespread use of the rape narrative device in adult books when I first started reading them (so, actually, I'm not that old). The organization that hires Evangeline, a lady with a paranormal gift that resulted in an attack after a case, sends her to a rusticate and recover in Crystal Gardens: A Ladies of Lantern Street Novel.

Paranormal Romances

I would suggest this book to someone who appreciates historical and paranormal romances (but perhaps not this particular presentation of it).Thenarration's voice (accent) was really unpleasant; it wasn't the usual narrator. The reading of the narrative and the performance of it were both great, but the male voices—especially Lucas's—were WRONG and reminded me of a wimpy, petulant, and haughty man who presumably had a paunch belly, weak chin, and receding hairline.(Consider Eustace from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in the Chronicles of Narnia.)

Naturally

Naturally, there are a few other mysteries to solve as well as interpersonal problems with Lucas, the proprietor of the Crystal Gardens, a mystical power vortex. Recently, I have steered clear of the majority of "paranormal" literature since they frequently contain characters that I just cannot accept, such as vampires, werewolves, demons, and the like, who are portrayed as romantic heroes. I suppose that certain things I am beyond my prime. Magic and psychic abilities are more in the world of the paranormal for me because I read a lot of fantasy in my adolescence from authors like Marion Zimmer Bradley, Anne McCaffery, and Mercedes Lackey. This book falls more into that category.

Beatrice Lockwood

Beatrice Lockwood is attempting to avoid her past after the murder of her former boss in her current position with Flint & Marsh. Joshua North, who doesn't believe in the supernatural but is known for being able to discover things, is looking for Beatrice because he thinks she's threatening his sister. Sadly, if you've read or listened to any of Amanda Quick's other works, you could feel that this book has echoes and reflections of earlier works, both from the Arcane Arc and different stand-alone novels. I could cite several such examples, but doing so would spoil the story and give away too much of the storyline.
