Elliot Rodger considered himself to be intelligent, refined, handsome, fashionable, and charming. He spent years trying to be cool so women would like him. He thought if he just wore expensive and fashionable clothing, had a better car, or if he were rich, then women would throw themselves at him. In fact, he thought himself to be “The Supreme Gentleman”.

Yet, women paid no attention to him. His only conclusion was that they were genetically flawed, and because of this they ignored him and threw themselves at men who were ignorant, savage brutes. In his mind, his lack of success with women had ruined his life. He began to psychologically deteriorate.

Rodger decided to get revenge. He spent months planning his “Day of Retribution”, an act where he would kill as many attractive women, and the type of men that they were drawn to, as he could in a savage attack. Then he acted on his plan, killing six people and wounding numerous others in what became known as the Isla Vista Massacre. The story does not end with Rodger however, as numerous other incels have since committed copycat attacks.

The "Supreme Gentleman" Killer by Brian Whitney is the story of Elliot Rodger and how he turned from a nice, quiet, polite young man to the first self-identified incel (involuntarily celibate) killer.

Could have been better.

I expected Whitney to fill in more of the gaps between Rodger’s Manifesto and his thinking as well those around him. It’s mostly just a rehash of the manifesto itself. It skips over much detail. In addition (aside from discussing his impact on future incel killers) Whitney doesn’t go much into the aftermath. Nothing on how the victims families or the UCSB community moved afterwards. But he does add some analysis for understanding Rodger which redeems this book.

Don't waste your time

This is a feminist rant for most of the book. It paints all "incels" as rage filled murderous men who all hate women. It isn't until the afterward that the author goes into how Elliott Roger was a nut job. It's obvious that Elliott suffered from being alone with no knowledge of how to connect with people as well as had delusions of grandeur. Nowhere in the book does the writer of the forward nor does author admit that Elliott did have some correct observations they just ignore it and go with he was an incel so he was wrong in everything due to his hatred of women.

Good substitute for reading the OG Manifesto

Hardly a deep psychological dive on Rodger and men like him, but a great extended summary of his life and his manifesto, which is what I was looking for. The slight whine he gave Rodger in his reading really delighted me for some reason.
