With books like Serial Killers, Female Serial Killers and Sons of Cain, Peter Vronsky has established himself as the foremost expert on the history of serial killers. In this first definitive history of the "Golden Age" of American serial murder, when the number and body count of serial killers exploded, Vronsky tells the stories of the most unusual and prominent serial killings from the 1950s to the early 21st century. From Ted Bundy to the Golden State Killer, our fascination with these classic serial killers seems to grow by the day.

Historia
Verteran investigative journalist Stevie Cameron first began following the story of missing women in 1998, when the odd newspaper piece appeared chronicling the disappearances of drug-addicted sex trade workers from Vancouver's notorious Downtown Eastside. It was not until February 2002 that pig farmer Robert William Pickton would be arrested, and 2008 before he was found guilty, on six counts of second-degree murder. These counts were appealed and in 2010, the Supreme Court of Canada rendered its conclusion.

There is little more terrifying than those who hunt, stalk, and snatch their prey under the cloak of darkness. These hunters search not for animals, but for the touch, taste, and empowerment of human flesh. They are cannibals, vampires, and monsters, and they walk among us. These serial killers are not mythical beasts with horns and shaggy hair. They are people living among society, going about their day-to-day activities until nightfall. They are the Dennis Rader's, the fathers, husbands, church-going members of the community.

In July 1965, teenagers Sylvia and Jenny Likens were left in the temporary care of Gertrude Baniszewski, a middle-aged single mother, and her seven children. The Baniszewski household was overrun with children. There were few rules and ample freedom. Sadly, the environment created a dangerous hierarchy of social Darwinism where the strong preyed on the weak. What transpired in the following three months was both riveting and chilling.

Born in China’s northwestern province, Sayragul Sauytbay trained as a doctor before being appointed a senior civil servant. But her life was upended when the Chinese authorities incarcerated her. Her crime? Being Kazakh, one of China’s ethnic minorities. The northwestern province borders the largest number of foreign nations and is the point in China that is the closest to Europe. In April 1944, Rudolf Vrba became one of the very first Jews to escape from Auschwitz and make his way to freedom—among only a tiny handful who ever pulled off that near-impossible feat. He did it to reveal the truth of the death camp to the world—and to warn the last Jews of Europe what fate awaited them. Against all odds, Vrba and his fellow escapee, Fred Wetzler, climbed mountains, crossed rivers, and narrowly missed German bullets until they had smuggled out the first full account of Auschwitz the world had ever seen.

A new killer is stalking the streets of London’s East End. Though newspapers have dubbed him 'the Torso Killer’, this murderer’s work is overshadowed by the hysteria surrounding Jack the Ripper’s Whitechapel crimes. Historia
The Sinner and the Saint is the deeply researched and immersive tale of how Dostoevsky came to write this great murder story - and why it changed the world. As a young man, Dostoevsky was a celebrated writer, but his involvement with the radical politics of his day condemned him to a long Siberian exile. There, he spent years studying the criminals that were his companions. Upon his return to St. Petersburg in the 1860s, he fought his way through gambling addiction, debilitating debt, epilepsy, the deaths of those closest to him, and literary banishment.

When you think of serial killers throughout history, the names that come to mind are ones like Jack the Ripper, John Wayne Gacy, and Ted Bundy. But what about Tillie Klimek, Moulay Hassan, Kate Bender? The narrative we’re comfortable with is the one where women are the victims of violent crime, not the perpetrators. In fact, serial killers are thought to be so universally, overwhelmingly male that in 1998, FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood infamously declared in a homicide conference, “There are no female serial killers.”

This stunningly personal document and extraordinary history of the turbulent '60s and early '70s displays James Baldwin's fury and despair more deeply than any of his other works. In vivid detail he remembers the Harlem childhood that shaped his early consciousness, the later events that scored his heart with pain - the murders of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, his sojourns in Europe and in Hollywood, and his return to the American South to confront a violent America face-to-face.

Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Historia
When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, approximately 160,000 Jews called Berlin home. By 1943 less than 5,000 remained in the nation's capital, the epicenter of Nazism, and by the end of the war, that number had dwindled to 1,000. All the others had died in air raids, starved to death, committed suicide, or been shipped off to the death camps. In this captivating and harrowing book, Leonard Gross details the real-life stories of a dozen Jewish men and women who spent the final 27 months of World War II underground, hiding in plain sight.

The sanatorium in the village of Olalla, west of Seattle, was surrounded by a beautiful forest, sparkling waters and fresh air. Great collection of true crime
This is a great collection of short true crime stories. what I appreciate about Green's writing is that it gives the gist of the story without an overwhelming amount of unnecessary detail. This collection is perfect that you can listen to one entire story on a couple of hours and take a break as needed, because some of these stories are intense.

Great books! May be sensitive for some…
These books were well written and narrated wonderfully! They were of cases that I’d never heard of and were very interesting. Readers be wary, many of these include crimes against children. Worth the listen.

There's no terror like true terror...
This massive compilation of terrifying tales is, in fact, a true account of various events that shocked and horrified the public across several countries and spanning several decades. All the stories have one unifying characteristic: people are capable of great evil. Anyone with an interest in criminal justice, history, or psychology will, in my opinion, be fascinated by the true stories of these misanthropes, misogynists, and miscreants. Fascinating insights into their childhoods, their psychopathies, their relationships with others and with society, in general, are offered to provide context into the possible motivations for their actions. Both the author, Ryan Green, and the narrator, Steve White, have provided outstanding effort in this searing collection of unforgettable atrocities.
Included within this compendium are:
KILL ‘EM ALL – A staggering account culled from the subject’s own autobiography detailing the horrifying crimes of Charles ‘Carl’ Panzram, considered to be one of the most sadistic serial killers in history.
BURIED BENEATH THE BOARDING HOUSE – The scandalous story of California resident, Dorothea Helen Puente, who in the 1980s, under the guise of running a boarding house for the disadvantaged, was found to have been collecting the social security checks for tenants she had murdered and buried on her property.
THE TOWNHOUSE MASSACRE - The story of Richard Speck and his brutal acts of misogyny directed toward eight student nurses, shocking Chicago residents, are clearly detailed in all their grim horror as is the nightmarish evolution of a young boy into the infamous monster whose devilish deeds garnered massive national media attention in 1966.
THE CURSE - A highly detailed and totally absorbing depiction of the life of the infamous Italian serial killer Leonarda Ciancuilli, often referred to as the “Soap-Maker of Correggio”. Though her life was filled with tragedy, misfortune and disappointment, it was her misguided beliefs that led her to kill. She is famous for using her victim’s bodies to make soap and for using their blood to bake teacakes which she served to her unsuspecting family and friends.
THE TEXAS TOWER SNIPER – An unflinching examination of the incredibly sad, yet sometimes remarkable life of Charles Whitman and his downward spiral culminating in the marine veteran taking several weapons up into the main building tower at the University of Texas at Austin on August 1, 1966, where he opened fire killing 14 people and wounding many others. At the time, the attack was the deadliest mass shooting by a lone gunman in U.S. history.
THE KENTUCKY CANNIBAL – The American frontier is often presented in a highly glamorized fashion completely inconsistent with the harsh realities which bred a particularly ruthless individual named Boone Helm, the “Kentucky Cannibal”. The grisly details of his life story are the stuff of nightmares.
VAMPIRE KILLER – This bone-chilling account of one of humanity’s most ghoulish serial killers, Anthony Richard (Rick) Trenton Chase, will have you reaching for something warm and comforting. While not the most prolific serial killer in history, he did inspire many episodes of popular TV crime shows with his gruesome exploits. Only the strong of stomach should attempt to follow the 1977-1978 Sacramento, California, journey of Richard Chase as he plumbs the depths of mental illness and human depravity.
GORILLA KILLER - Earle Nelson roamed over 7,000 miles of North America undetected, all the while satisfying his deranged desires. He choked the life out of more than twenty unsuspecting women, subjected their bodies to the most unspeakable acts, and seemingly enjoyed the entire process. Often cited as America’s first twentieth century serial sex murderer, he became something of a ‘superstar criminal’ before the concept of serial killers was popularized by the likes of Gacy, Bundy, Dahmer, or BTK.
NO PLACE FOR THE WEAK - A compelling review of the events that rocked Adelaide, South Australia, between 1992 and 1999 when the stunning details of a series of grisly murders, the “Snowtown murders”, committed by John Bunting and a small group of his acquaintances were discovered by local police.
DOCTOR SATAN – A detailed account of the life and crimes of Marcel Petiot, a sadistic serial killer active in 1940s Paris. Accepted by the community as a beloved and trusted physician, a community leader and politician, and a staunch patriot, his story proves that truth is stranger than fiction. In 1944 police raided one of his homes and what they found within defies belief.
THE BEAST – A riveting narrative exploring the heinous crimes of the highly charismatic Canadian serial killer, Clifford Olson, Jr. “The Beast of British Columbia” darkened the 80s with his penchant for kidnapping, raping, and killing children and teens. Despite having scored the highest rating ever recorded on the Hare Psychopathy Checklist, he somehow managed to charm his unsuspecting victims into his car for a one-way ride to pain, humiliation and an untimely death.
CRIMSON PETTICOATS – A profoundly disturbing, yet exceptionally engrossing, exposé detailing the vicious crimes of Martin Dumollard, a French serial killer who, with the help and guidance of his wife, was responsible for numerous brutal deaths of young maids between the years of 1855 and 1861.
