Bob Inama was an outstanding university student with plans to attend law school when he is drafted into the US Army. Stationed in West Germany, he is glad to be fluent in German, especially after meeting Luisa Voigt at a church social. As they spend time together, they form a close connection. But when Bob receives classified orders to leave for undercover work immediately, he does not get the chance to say good-bye.

With a fake identity, Bob’s special assignment is to be a spy embedded in East Germany. His undercover job will give him access to government sites to map out strategic military targets. But Soviet and East German spies, the secret police, and Stasi informants are everywhere, and eventually Bob is caught and sent to a brutal East German prison. Interrogated and tortured daily, Bob clings to any hope he can find - from the sunlight that marches across the wall of his prison, to the one guard who secretly treats him with kindness, to the thought of one day seeing Luisa again.

Author Heather B. Moore masterfully alternates the stories of Bob and Luisa, capturing the human drama unique to Cold War Germany as well as the courage and the resilience of the human spirit.

Powerful

Thank you for writing this powerful book. I had a very hard time of putting it down. The way that you described somethings I could almost picture the scene in front of me. Such an amazing book.

Great historical novel

I enjoyed the way the author took the basis of a mqns experience and placed it in a novel. The fictional characters and story were well developed and believable. l highly recommend this book.

Book of faith and gratitude

This was an uplifting story about a man’s experience during the war. How he over came fear, disappointment and cruelty with kindness and gratitude. Although his life’s dreams and plans were altered, with faith, he was blessed with a rich and full life.

Uplifting Historical Fiction

This historical fiction based on a true story was both uplifting and inspirational. I learned lots about the Cold War and about the brave souls who worked to bring freedom to others. Even in prison, Bob was able to share faith and hope with others.

So well written and so thought provoking. It held my attention and had me finding things to do just so I could keep listening.

Inspiring!

The character development is well done and the story telling gives insight into the strong character of Bob and how his faith not only carried him through horrendous experiences but helped him gain an even greater heart full of love and gratitude. Very inspiring showing the power of the resilience and magnitude of the human character.

Amazing retelling of a heartwarming story

This book is so well written and tells a hard and beautiful story. Bob inama faced so much as his time as a spy. This book does an amazing job of capturing his love, and faith throughout his difficult journey. My heart breaks for all that occurred during the cold War, and this story does well to share the intensity, uncertainty, and terrifying times that the world faced. May we all strive to have the faith, love and compassion of these characters.

great historical novel

well written and executed. this novel shows the individual human perspective of the epicenter of the cold war. And the proper way of dealing with a systemic tragedy. No better recommendation for a strong Christian faith could be argued.

Descriptions of surroundings were wonderful. I would like to read more from this author.
