A great beginning for a series!

The author Brad W. King had started writing a beautiful story, this first part as short as it is includes so much in it, like a great adventure, mysteries, gangsters and much much more.
I can only hope that the whole series will continue with such greatness as this was.
A lot of credit belongs to the narrator C. J. McAllister who totally brought this story to life, every character was narrated perfectly, you could feel each of the characters felling like your own.
Both the author and the narrator or more like the story and the narrator where a perfect match!

I full heartedly without a doubt recommend this audiobook for all !!!

Great concept, messy follow through

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author. I’m torn whether I will give another book a try. I love the premise of the story and am interested in where this is going. There was action and intrigue. My issues are with the continuity of the story. I’ll try to be vague to not give too much away.
-major dig and only one security guard?
-crime syndicate breaks into the tomb but leaves one wall in tact and that is the one they’re looking for?
-Where does Fin- recent college grad- get the money to go to the tundra?
-why would Egyptian hidden city be all the way in the Siberian tundra- how did they get materials there?
-love of his life so soon?
-one day in Egypt, next day fully kitted for the tundra?
-altitude sickness?
-contents of one box materializes when the holder is not present?
-all supposed to be secretive yet physical things happen that are observed and unexplained? Wouldn’t that nullify the secrecy?
-one paragraph states someone has only few years to live, next one says few hours?
I’m all for si-fi, fantasy, mystical stuff, but things need to have a degree of plausibility and have continuity in the imagined.

This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( CJ McAllister ) and I would listen to another. He did great narrating this book. He gave each character individual voices and expression. He did well with the action parts.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

An Exciting Novella

This book lets you know of Finn Shaw and does it in an exciting and thrilling way. I enjoyed the pace and the life that the narrator brought to the story. I am looking forward to listing to more.

Discoveries, deceptions and digits.

This book acts as an excellent prequel to a.new series, Father Earth, which details how Finn Shaw, aged 24, came to be the person he will undoubtedly be in the forthcoming books. The earlier part of the novella is devoted to Finn's personal background: his hopes, ambitions and the family he loves, at the same time giving the reader a glimpse into his personality. The the location moves to Egypt with new boss, Ryan, and the excavations taking place, and it is here that the adventure begins.

The story is intriguing but holds little sense of tension and, although considerable energy has been put into building character, they remain mostly flat and unreal, protagonists seen through a misted glass. And the ending, when it comes, seems to be rushed.
C.J.McAllister, the narrator, helps to fill some of the character deficiencies, giving each an individual voice and breathing extra life into each one, Finn included. And his reading was paced with the text. But his performance is tempered by the writing itself - there is only so much that he can do.

Overall, it was a short, easy read which, essentially, simply introduced the man who will almost certainly be the main protagonist of the new series whose nature will be essential in understanding the books to come. These hold promise of exciting stories and great potential. My thanks to the rights holder of Silver City who, at my request, freely gifted me a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom.

A pulse-pounding adventure in ancient Egypt!

Brad W. King's 'The Silver City,' narrated by C. J. McAllister, is a pulse-pounding adventure in ancient Egypt. King's storytelling is superb, and McAllister's narration is captivating. A must-listen novella that sets the stage for an epic series.

Good premise, needs work

The good:

The premise is extremely fun. It's basically Tomb Raider/Indiana Jones so the opportunities for where this series could go are endless. The characters are in their fledgling stages with some good foundations on which to build later. The narration is excellent; tone is consistent and the voices are distinct and colorful.

The bad:

For this level of suspension of disbelief, ages 11-13 is too old for this book. This would be better suited to the next age down; around 9 at most. The timeline is ridiculous, even for a kids book. Every superlative experience happens in basically a day.

The ugly:

The sense of pacing is abysmal. It lingers forever on tiny moments of backstory but then pivotal action happens so fast that if you blink you'll miss it. Also, please ret-con out the ending in the next book. Without spoiling it, what happens is too powerful, severely rushed, doesn't fit the rest of the book, and basically makes no sense.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Not a bad beginning

I finished the book "The evil of father" first, and I'm pretty sure that's how it should be. This was a fun precursor to that story, great if you're a fan if the series or are interested in it. I'd recommend it.

Exciting thrill ride

I very much enjoyed this novella. It managed to pack a lot of information and scenes into such a short tale while still leaving the reader wanting more.

Narrator C. J. McAllister did an excellent job narrating and bringing the story to life. Pacing was excellent.

pretty good prequel

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was an interesting, if short, sci fi/adventure story. I thought it was well written and narrated and very entertaining. It was good enough that I'm interested in the full series.
