Thomas Pendleton loves his wife, Ann, and six-year-old son, Seth, more than anything, but his job often makes him an absent husband and father. One day, after Thomas leaves on a business trip, his wife and son are killed in a car accident. Thomas shuts himself off from the world and is at home grieving when a cosmic storm enters Earth's atmosphere. Scientists are baffled by its composition and origins, but not nearly as much as they are by the storm's side effect: Anyone who has died and chosen not to cross over is suddenly visible and can interact with the living.

Ann does not return, but Seth does, and Thomas sees it as a miraculous second chance to spend time with his son and keep the promises he had previously broken. They set out on a trip to the Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., but little do they know that they are traveling headlong into a social and political maelstrom that will test Thomas in ways he could never imagine. Along the way, they come face to face with armed kidnappers who want Seth for his supernatural abilities, meet up with a medium, the ghost of a slave boy, and encounter none other than Abraham Lincoln.

Citing an overpopulation problem caused by the Impalpables, the government begins to take drastic measures. Military scientists have a device called the Tesla Gate that is said to return Impals to where they were before the storm. Many have nicknamed the controversial machine "the shredder" because no one really knows if it will do what it is reputed to, or if it will instead shred the Impals - effectively destroying the soul. Thomas is determined to do everything possible to save Seth, or at the very least, ensure that Seth doesn't have to endure his sentence alone....

What made the experience of listening to The Tesla Gate the most enjoyable?

Wow, this was a great read. Hits on sci-fi in a new and interestingly refreshing way. While the story can be emotionally intense it really makes you think about the universe and all that we are yet to know. I was given a free copy of this book for my honest review.

Love, love, love!

This story has an exciting premise and has a great mix of science fiction, fantasy, horror, mystery and the human connection. It also is narrated by one of my favorite narrators, Jake Urry. I had never heard him do a southern accent before but he sounded great. He really is a natural at reading horror and would sound engaging just reading the dictionary.

I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Peter Clines with books like 14 and the fold. I hope there will be more books like this from John Mimms too.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

A Refreshingly Different Story, Great Narration!

New concept. Good premise, but I feel more could have been done with the characters. I just kept waiting for something great with the story line besides they all get extinguished! Narrator did an ok job but was a little slow. I was given this book for free for my honest review.

This is the story of a busy man who gets a second chance in life. Thomas Pendleton could never make time for his family due to his job, but he realized to late about priorities in life. His wife and six-year-old son get killed in a car accident, and Thomas’ life gets turned upside down. A strange cosmic storm approaches Earth and changes the energy of the ones deceased that didn’t decide to cross the door, those popularly called ghosts. Seth is one of these souls who decided to stay behind, and Thomas will get a second chance to try to make things in a different way.

Paranormal stories are not usually my cup of tea, so I tend to take this kind of books with a grain of salt. I confess that having Tesla in the title and the fact that the audiobook was narrated by Jake Urry is what sold me on this one. There is not a lot of science in this book, but I have to say that this time I didn’t care at all. This is such a beautiful story about the important things in life and second chances that we never get but we’d love to. Thomas and Seth’s story is one of hope, sacrifice, and also forgiving oneself. It’s about rights, equality, but also fear and racism. This is one of those books that will stay with you for a while after having finished it.

The characters were very well depicted, and their relationships and dialogs felt natural. Thomas and Seth felt really close and I deeply cared for them. Touching important subjects is nothing without great characters that bring those subjects close to the reader. Mimms wove a wonderful tale with realistic and relatable characters, and this is what made this book perfect.

And what can I say about Jake Urry? He could read the phone book and make it interesting. I am amazed at how deep a voice he has for someone so young. He can really pull off an American accent and make it sound natural. Urry gave distinctive voices to all the characters and delivered very emotive character interpretations. He also used a subtle reverb effect for the impals that worked really well. With audiobooks I often choose books more due to the narrator than the author, and this was one of those cases. Any story will shine when narrated by Jake Urry.

I received a copy of this book in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.

Wonderful text and narration

O.K. Overall, this was a good book. At times, I thought it dragged by too much detail. After listening to those sections and thinking about them, I realized I was wrong, and that the information was really needed. I recommend this story to all, in it's genre. Now for the obligatory: "I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review."
