Thoroughly enjoyable

A good plot, good character development and great narration

I’m new to Joanna Shupe but will definitely buy more!

Narrator does terrible accents.

But I love this author and the steamy romance was worth it despite the bad voice acting.

Awesome book

What more can I say. Joanna Shupe is the best romance author to date. Her romance is so beautiful. Just perfect. Her sexual scenes are breathtaking. Her historical knowledge is awesome. She is my number one go to for historical romance. Justine eyre was never a favorite of mine but she has improved with age. She’s awesome as well So totally worth a credit. Ok let’s get on with book 2. I can’t wait!!!!!

Historical New York, Uptown Girl & Powerful Lawyer

I am an avid historical romance reader, so when I came across Joanna Shupe’s The Rogue of Fifth Avenue, I was instantly intrigued. As a New Yorker (currently living on the West Coast), I loved traveling back in time to the New York of yesterday.

I was so excited, in fact, to start this book that I had simultaneously purchased a paperback copy, the audiobook, and checked the e-book out of the library.

Mamie is a debutante from a wealthy uptown family. She has a big compassionate heart. It is clear she has great love for her sisters and respect for her family. However, she is drawn to the world of New York that she is not supposed to see – the gambling halls, the downtown tenements, the lives of the poor.

It is through this exposure to class inequality that she develops a pertinacity for pick-pocketing the wealthy to supplement the measly incomes of some families she befriends in the tenements. Her compassion is so honorable and makes her a very appealing heroine.

Frank Tripp is Mamie’s father’s high power lawyer. He is well known throughout the city for his hard work for New York’s elite. When the two cross paths, almost everyone can see their chemistry. Mamie’s father forbids her from entering in any relationship with a man besides the one he has arranged for her – as if she is another entity of his business to control.

Mamie is rebellious and likes to do things on her terms, so if she is told not to do something, her heart will want to go there even if she knows it is wrong. She cannot deny her attraction to Frank and he is not willing to give her up either.

But along the way, secrets are exposed and Mamie doesn’t know who she can trust. This was a great read, with high tension and with big stakes and people’s lives on the line.

Less is More

This would have been a great book if the author spent more time with character development and less time describing the sex scenes. I’m certainly not a prude but I’d like to know why Mamie did what she did in the poverty district. What moved her, why was Frank a lawyer, what made him stop all contact with his mother and brother. I’ve noticed that a lot of the authors are concentrating on erotica instead of the story, how very sad.

Narrator was great, story kept moving, amazingly liked Mamie's dad towards the end and enjoyed how he was revealed by circumstance.

Not all that good..

Jeez! What to say? I didn’t like it, honestly. But that’s because I’m tired of the book where he lusts after the heroine but is constantly telling himself he’s not good enough for her. That has gotten old for me. He’s not good enough or she’s not good enough.

The best part of the book was the courtroom drama at the very end but that didn’t even last long enough.

There were 2 or 3 explicit sex scenes in this book and the F-bomb was used 29 times.

As to the narration: Justine Eyre is just okay for me, no matter what she reads.
