Resumen del Editor

Anyone who has ever picked up a creativity or self-help guide has likely been advised to keep to a daily schedule, daily pages, or other everyday ritual. But "just do it" usually just doesn't work. Longtime creativity coach and therapist Eric Maisel has found an approach that does work: giving clients, and now listeners, a clear understanding of what makes them personally blocked or stuck and unable to start or finish. Not enough time, resources, or talent? Fear of success, guilt about being "selfish", and variations on the theme of "what's the point?"

Maisel has spent 30 years helping people overcome these kinds of blocks with skills including anxiety management, positive self-talk, cognitive behavioral therapy, and even "sleep thinking". The tools Maisel offers are a potent alternative to waiting for the spirit to move or the muse to inspire: a sustainable, self-directed path to success.

Great resource for creative professionals

Strongly recommended for creatives looking to up their game. Writing is thoughtful, empathetic and provides loads of practical advice and methods to address all areas of a creative life. It's like having a creative coach. Top-notch narration by Daniel Henning.

Powerful book

A great book and I recommend it. I like how it’s organized into three sections: important elements of a daily practice, the different types of daily practice, the challenges to daily practice.

This book is for those people who might have personal projects they want to undertake. It’s not just for the “creators”. This book is for anyone who might want to make consistent progress over a longer period of time in a particular area or just balance out the ways we get pulled on the outside with spiritual strength on the inside.

I liked how Dr. Maisel included conversations with his clients to illustrate various points in the book.

This was my first introduction to Dr. Maisel’s philosophy of Kyrism and I was glad to have it. It sounds like a very interesting life philosophy and I’m interested to learn more about it because I think it is wholesome and uplifting.

This what a cult sounds like.

It's a cult. No two ways about it. I'm very disappointed that he went this direction. It's just gross.

Some great ideas, but some very VERY bad ones too.

I came here to read some cool tips on developing discipline. While I did get some of that (and some of it was even useful) what I ended up getting more out of this was the author's penchant for damning all things mental health, something I find alarming considering he is a psychotherapist. I get it if you want to take an approach to mental health sans medication. But the blanket statements about mental health and medication being a scam is going way too far across the line for someone who is supposed to be a professional.

I also felt like every chapter was a sales pitch for the author's philosophy brand. I think that mentioning it here and there makes sense but it felt so forced and unnecessary in many parts of the book. I actually started cringing every time I heard the narrator say "Kirism."

The performance would have been 5 stars so note this isn't a mark against the narrator, but that it's such a poor read that even the best narrators can't make this thing worth listening to. I only gave 4 stars and not 1 star because it's not his fault the writing was trash.

Did not finish.
