Resumen del Editor

Ava McLaren is tired of being both a virgin, and a mere laboratory assistant for the Company of Rogues. When a baffling mystery rears its head, it presents her with the opportunity to work a real case...and perhaps get a taste of the passion that eludes her.

Blue bloods are dying from a mysterious disease, which should be impossible. Ava suspects there's more to the case than meets the eye and wants a chance to prove herself. There's just one catch - she's ordered to partner with the sexy mech, Kincaid, who's a constant thorn in her side. Kincaid thinks the only good blue blood is a dead one. He's also the very last man she would ever give her heart to...which makes him the perfect candidate for an affair.

The only rule? It ends when the case does.

But when an attempt on her life proves that Ava might be onto something, the only one who can protect her is Kincaid. Suddenly the greatest risk is not to their hearts, but whether they can survive a diabolical plot that threatens to destroy every blue blood in London - including Ava.

Contains mature themes.

The plot thickens … slowly

“I only wear my ‘monster who crushes humans beneath his heel face’ on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. You’re in luck, it was Thursday: hero day.”
On the up side, there’s more banter and fun between the series regulars. Said regulars are also very interesting characters. And I like that the bad guys make small appearances throughout instead of just surfacing at the end like in the author’s original series formula.

Ava’s inner monologue: “Stop talking you fool.”
On the down side, compared to book 1, the rest of the Company of Rogues doesn’t get nearly as much screen time as this book’s couple and their Beauty and the Beast romance. The mystery is also very convoluted, with multiple players and factions. Worse, it appears each story merely features one battle, with the war for all the marbles awaiting a finale that appears to be several books away.

“You’re my anchor.”
This author sure does love the angst, and the anchor declaration. Both Ava and Kincaid have horrible backstories as well as current Herculean hurdles. Thank goodness for Ava’s sunny disposition and Kincaid’s dirty talk, which even got me past the deflowering scene without too much eyeroll. This was a pretty good listen and necessary to move on, but I’m really looking forward to the romances featuring gents and ladies that are equally fierce.
